    Because a quorum was not present, the meeting was unofficial.



  2. Presentation by the San Francisco Symphony staff regarding 2003 Summer in the City concert series.

    The San Francisco Symphony staff presented the results of the FY 2003 Summer in the City concert series. John Kieser presented an analysis of the gross and net revenue per concert, as well as a summary for the series.

    Michele Prisk presented a sales report explaining that the light classics out performed the pops concerts and noted a shift in ticket buying patterns beginning in 2002. Historic trends were reversed and ticket sales were occurring the week or day of the concert rather than earlier as in past seasons.

    Michael Bartlett noted that the Gershwin and Carmina burana were especially popular. Patti Lupone's show was fantastic and she performed for the entire program rather than the second half as usual. The Carol Burnett and Frederica von Stade concerts did not do as well as anticipated.

    The concert period for 2004 will begin on July 9 with 10 to 12 concerts. kd Lang has been confirmed for July 23 and 24 and if those show sell out they may book another night. They are also considering Natalie Cole, as well as Gershwin, Tchaikovsky and Mozart.

    Oliver Theil presented the press packet and pointed out that the coverage was excellent both in large market media and small community based media.

    Sammi Madison discussed the evolving relationships between the Symphony and the cultural centers, specifically the Bayview Opera House, Mission Cultural Center and the African American Art and Culture Complex. She provided tickets to the three cultural centers for the Colors of Christmas concert and the Black and While Ball. She consulted with London Breed, Director of AAACC in the purchasing of a new piano at an extremely favorable price.

    Joyce Wessling discussed the Dolores Park concert which all agree was a great success. Approximately 7,000 people attended and both the SFS and the SFAC received numerous calls and letters expressing appreciation for the concert. The attendance and diversity of the audience was greater than in previous years. The free concert scheduled for July 11 will be in Dolores Park. The Symphony will begin reviewing other neighborhood parks for the free concert in the future. Ms. Wessling reported on the concert at the Chinese Cultural Center. The concert was sold out with an audience of 260. The artists performing were Yun Chu on violin, Yun Jie Liu on viola, Shu Yi Pai on cello and Dorian Ho on piano. They played three traditional Chinese pieces. The 2004 concert will be on February 15.

  3. Andrew Wood presentation regarding the International Arts Festival

    Andrew Wood, Director of the San Francisco International Arts Festival discussed the goals of the festival and the success of the first year's programs. He explained that the Board of Supervisors passed a resolution in September in support of the 2005 San Francisco International Arts Festival. Also, Supervisor Tom Ammiano is sponsoring legislation to recommend $700,000 in support of the festival.  Andrew Wood has partnered with Jocelyn Kane, Deputy Director of the Entertainment Commission, to act as the lead City agency in administering city funds should they be allocated. Mr. Wood is requesting that the Arts Commission pass a motion directing the staff to provide advice to the Entertainment Commission in fulfilling city policy in the administration of any city funds to the festival.  Since there is no quorum the matter will be placed on the agenda for the Full Commission on December 8, 2003.
