- Grove Street Arts Center Feasibility Study Report
Kyri McClellan and Jack Sylvan, of the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development (“MOEWD”), reported that their office was continuing discussions about developing the Grove Street site with SFJAZZ, with the private landowner of the corner parcel and with other City departments as required. The Committee and staff discussed several concerns about the project, and the need to balance the interests of the parties and what each brings to the negotiation. They emphasized the importance of the Arts Commission’s visibility and presence in the project, including the appropriate gallery and office space. Ms. McClellan said that her office hoped to have a proposal to submit to the Arts Commission and the Board of Supervisors at the end of August.
- Director’s Report
Mr. Cancel said that he is planning to prepare a formal report on the interagency dialogue on the Contemporary Art Museum of the Presidio. Commissioners noted that there was no unanimity of opinion on the proposed museum, and that it might be appropriate for the full Commission to vote on it; Mr. Cancel agreed.
On the Mexican Museum, Mr. Cancel reported that the Museum must pay back rent to Fort Mason before any funds are released to the Museum, and that the Redevelopment Agency is considering the Memorandum of Understanding.
Mr. Cancel reported that nominations for the Mayor’s Art Award had been received, and distributed the list of names. The Committee discussed the nominees. They suggested that since the first award had gone to a visual artist, this one should go to an artist in a different discipline. Commissioners also said that the artist should live in San Francisco, and they consider the award, if not for lifetime achievement, then recognition for work over a long period of time. After considering all the nominees, including many excellent choices, the Committee agreed to submit two names to the Mayor: Michael Tilson Thomas and Alonzo King.
