Lecture Series Coming to City Hall!

Kerry"s Notes
There is really exciting project you won"t want to miss! In 1987 during the renovation project in City Hall, a time capsule was discovered. It is on display in the South Light Court. On January 5th at 11:00 a.m. a new time capsule will be sealed and placed in the same location as the old one, to be opened in 100 years. The committee composed of Gladys Hansen, Susan Goldstein, Tony Irons, Nic Ziff and Myron Howard-Johnson, decided among hundreds of suggestions made by San Francisco"s citizens (a preliminary list is below). A ceremony will be held in City Hall"s front steps to commemorate this historic moment. Our Mayor Willie Brown, will be on hand to place items into the box and Tony Irons will return from Harvard to assist. Come and join "history" in the making." It"s a wonderful project not to miss.

Happy New Year!
It"s hard to believe that this January we begin our third year of programming throughout the ground floor! We invite you to join our artists and staff at our first reception of the year on Wednesday, January 17, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. As usual, we bring you an eclectic mix of art, ranging from gritty black and white photojournalism to quilts, collages, and paintings. Featured in the central area is Lost Promise: The Criminal Justice System by Robert Gumpert. Gumpert worked with the Sheriff"s Department, the DA"s Office, and the court system for more than a year to assemble an engrossing and often shocking series told in words and pictures. Following are dates of each show:

January 5 - March 3
Lost Promise: The Criminal Justice System - photographs by Robert Gumpert

January 10 - February 18
Paintings by Suzanna Mah Fong

January 10 - March 11
Paintings by Jan Wurm
Quilts by CherryMae Golston
Collages by Stefan Komozi

As always, I welcome your response and comments. I can be reached by email at rupert_jenkins@ci.sf.ca.us.

Lecture Series Coming to City Hall!

The Story of San Francisco Lecture Series
January 30, March 27, April 24

The Museum of the City of San Francisco and San Francisco City Hall will present a special Lecture Series in the year 2001 entitled "The Story of San Francisco." The series is designed to honor the communities of our great City and their contributions to the unique history of San Francisco.

The Lecture Series will be presented in the South Light Court on the last Tuesday of each month, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The program includes a 45 to 65 minute lecture. This will be followed by 15 to 20 minutes of questions and answers. A reception with the presenter will follow.

This Lecture Series will benefit The Museum of the City of San Francisco by providing funds for the production costs of the Lecture Series, and the installation costs for the historical exhibits being presented in the South Light Court of City Hall. In this regard, there will be a $6 donation requested for admission to the Lecture Series.

The Lecture Series will be launched during the Birthday Celebration honoring the 154th Anniversary of the Naming of the City of San Francisco. This special event will take place on Tuesday, January 30th, in the South Light Court, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The celebration will officially open the new historical exhibit in the South Light Court concerning the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906.

Gladys Hansen, the Founder and Curator of The Museum of the City of San Francisco, will initiate the Lecture Series. She will speak about the courage and will of the citizens of San Francisco, who rebuilt our City into the great multicultural center of today.

The Birthday Celebration will include musical performances and a wine and cheese reception with the Board of Directors of the Museum of the City of San Francisco and City officials.

The Birthday Celebration honoring the 154th Anniversary of the Naming of the City of San Francisco is a free event, and all citizens of our City are invited to attend.

Several of the Lecturers for "The Story of San Francisco" Series have been confirmed, including Eva Royale, Public Action Manager of the United Farm Workers of America, speaker on the history of this important movement for workers" rights. The event will honor the union"s founders, Cesar Chavez and Delores Huerta, on the occasion of the first annual celebration of the Cesar Chavez statewide holiday. This Lecture will take place on Tuesday, March 27. The focus of following month"s lecture will be on Architect and Preservationist David Robinson. This event will take place on Tuesday, April 24.
