City Hall Has a New Building Manager!
The Building Office in City Hall has a new Manager, Corrine E. Mehigan. Corrine started on May 29, 2001, and she is very enthusiastic and ready to take on her new responsibilities as a Building Manager. Here are Corrine"s personal thoughts on her new position:

"Although I enjoyed my most recent position as Event & Premium Seating Services Manager at Dodger Stadium, I am a Giants fan. I was born and raised in San Francisco. My family and childhood friends live in, and around, the city. It is a dream come true to be back home and an honor to be part of the City Hall Building Management team.

As Building Manager, I will provide more than the necessary enthusiasm and dedication it takes to represent this significant building. Together with the Building Management team, I take great pride in maintaining and upgrading City Hall. We will stay creative and innovative, while having the highest respect for the rich history and tradition of this great building and the city of San Francisco. I look forward to meeting all of you. Feel free to call me at 554-4857 anytime with any questions or suggestions you might have. "

June Programs on Citywatch, S.F. Cable Channel 26: The Story of S.F. and Community Conversations on Parks

June episode of "The Story of San Francisco" lecture series features Allen Cohen. Mr. Cohen will show visuals from his multimedia CD-ROM, entitled "Haight Ashbury in the 1960s," and he will read some of his poetry to illustrate key points of his presentation. Allen Cohen is best known as the founder and editor of the legendary psychedelic underground newspaper, the "San Francisco Oracle." He is also the author of two books, "Childbirth is Ecstasy" and "The Reagan Poems." In 1967, he co-produced The First Human Be-in.

"The Story of San Francisco" premieres Wednesday, June 27 at 9 PM, with replays on Friday, June 29 and Sunday, July 1 at noon. (1 hour)

"Safety in Our Parks," is this month’s installment of Community Conversations. Parks are fabulous places to go to escape the concrete jungle of San Francisco. Unfortunately, our little green oases are not immune from big city problems. Park users should be aware of safety concerns. Captain James Dudley of the San Francisco Police Department and Pam Matsuda from the program "Safety Awareness For Everyone" will discuss typical park crime and how to avoid becoming a victim. Recreation Director Kim Mitchell adds to the conversation by explaining how recreation and parks can be used to prevent crime.

"Community Conversations on Safety in Our Parks" cablecasts Sundays at 7:30 PM, Wednesdays at 9:30 AM and Fridays at 4 PM. (30 minutes)

Spare the Air and win prizes!
This summer the City and County of San Francisco again joins over 1,000 Bay Area companies in the Spare Air program. On days when ozone (smog) levels are expected to violate state and federal health standards, Bay Area residents are asked to refrain from activities that cause pollution.

To find out when a Spare the Air day will occur, you can sign up to receive an e-mail notification at www.sfgov.org/cap. By doing so, you will be entered in a drawing for great prizes. Also, when a poor quality air day is predicted, vivid orange signs will be posted at the exits to City Hall. When you receive notice of a Spare the Air Day, consider taking transit or carpooling (Automobiles are the number one source of smog in the Bay Area, creating over 400 tons of air pollution every day!).

The Spare the Air season is especially critical this year because of the state’s energy shortages. As blackouts occur or are close to occurring, numerous buildings revert to diesel generators as backup power. These diesel backup generators are heavily polluting and may exacerbate existing air quality problems. Thus, our current energy crisis also has the potential to create severe environmental and health impacts.

Here are some things you can do to Spare the Air:
Reduce your driving – take transit, carpool, walk, or bike.
Conserve energy - reduce your use of electric appliances, especially air conditioners.
Don"t use gas powered lawn mowers and leaf blowers on Spare the Air days.
Avoid using consumer aerosol products such as hairspray and household cleaners.
Refuel your car in the evening after the sun has gone down For more information on the Spare the Air campaign, contact Tom Adams at 554-6074 or visit www.sparetheair.org. Spare the Air is a ten year old voluntary air pollution reduction program sponsored by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
