Committee agreed, at the June 2, 2007 meeting, to discuss “health” as the next topic from the Girls Report. Committee Member Li began the discussion by informing the committee of her summer internship work at S.P.U.R., the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association. Ms. Li talked about her studies of global warming and the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) study of urban communities by aggregated by cultural background. Ms. Li also informed the committee that the TRI study for Bay Area had not been broken down by gender yet, but had noted all of the city’s pollutants that caused cancer. Chair Ing inquired about specific locations. Ms. Li replied that the study focused on San Francisco and the East Bay.
Chair Ing inquired about the experiences of the visitors in the health education courses. Visitor replied that health and sexual education courses began for her in the 8th grade. Chair Ing replied that her sexual education courses began in the 9th grade. Ms. Li replied that she had read an article in the San Francisco Chronicle that not all public schools had sexual education. She had also seen in a web article, that is cost approximately $18,500 to provide sex education through Proposition H funding in 9 schools whereas it costs $50,000 to provide HIV/AIDS education but the article didn’t indicate how many schools that supplied.
Chair Ing solicited other ideas health issues and concerns from members and visitors. Ms. Li inquired with visitors about what might be important health issues for them. Member of the public replied that she liked that San Francisco had a lot of “free” information and products for health. Another member of the public said that there was a lot of attention on HIV/AIDS. Another member of the public indicated that all her classes on health education began when she was in the 8th grade but that she had forgotten most of the information. Ms. Li indicated that she had rarely seen any anti-AIDS commercials but the “TRUTH” health commercials focused on anti-drug use and not sex education for young people. She also indicated that Trojan Condom commercials mentioned using a condom only once and then it goes on with general discussion in the commercial.
Chair Ing moved discussion to body image and Ms. Li indicated that she read Seventeen magazine and their primary health topics were not so much about body image but rather fashion styles and managing menstrual cycles.
2. “Alcopops” Anti-Girlie Drinks Campaign and Rally
Policy Analyst Kim-Shree Maufas updated committee member Ms. Li on her role, with member Melissa Padilla, at the Alcopops Rally and Press Conference at the San Francisco State Building on 455 Golden Gate Avenue at 4 p.m. on July 18, 2007. She reviewed the literature in meeting packet that was provided by the Marin Institute in San Rafael, California and discussed the upcoming Alcopops survey, which will be conducted at Department in the Status of Women office in July before the press conference.

Victoria told the committee that she had been working for a couple of weeks and helped prepare the meeting packets today.
B. Girl Fest Update – 2007 (July 19th – 22nd)
Chair Ing wanted to have the GiRLFeST Bay Area contacts list resent to her so that she could contact GiRLFeST Directors. Policy Analyst Maufas explained typical volunteer duties for the Young Women’s Health Summit at the Sanchez Elementary Site, so members of the Committee and the public would understand what was expected of them if they worked at GiRLFeST Bay Area on any of those days.
C. Girl’s Services Directory: Review draft and make last changes
