MINUTES

 

             I.      CALL TO ORDER /ROLL CALL                                                  

   Action: Dawn Liu called meeting to order at 5:11p.m. and requested a roll call of members

present.

 

   Committee Members Present:

Dawn Liu (April Chairperson), Member representing the San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education’s Student Advisory Council

   Public present:

   Zully Bates, San Francisco State University undergraduate student interested in working with

    the Department on the Status of Women as an intern.

  

          II.      ADOPTION OF AGENDA

        IV.      INTRODUCTIONS & GIRLS COMMITTEE BUSINESS                     

A.         Girls Committee Business

Policy Analyst Maufas referred Members to their meeting packets for the updated “brain

storming” spreadsheet with additions from Members Li and Padilla. This sheet can be used at the GiRLFeST Youth Steering Committee meetings for workshop ideas. Commissioner Shorter encouraged Members to review spreadsheet in-between committee meetings.

 

B.         A Report on Girls: Benchmarks for the Future - Education Review

Policy Analyst Maufas provided San Francisco Unified School District’s Summary Profile of the entire student population (55,497).  Members reviewed summaries of 5 Independent Schools: San Francisco Day School (Pre-K-8), Immaculate Conception Academy (Girls, 9-12), Hamlin (Girls, 9-12), St. Ignatius College Prep (9-12), and University High School (9-12). Members reviewed and discussed statistical information. 

            Commissioner Shorter emphasized that she would only consider feedback from those

            members who have read the Girl’s Report.  Chairperson Liu and Commissioner Shorter

            requested that the education agenda item to be continued to the May 2007 committee

            meeting.   

 

           V.      OLD BUSINESS

A.                 Graduate Intern Update:

Policy Analyst Maufas informed committee members that the Department was still seeking interns from San Francisco State University to assist with the Girls Committee and the 2007 GiRLFeST Bay Area.  An undergraduate student is interested working with the Girls Committee.

 

B.                 GiRLFeST – Update (July 19-20, 2007)                                    

Members reviewed updated GiRLFeST “to do” list that was sent to Department on the Status of Women (DOSW) in February 2007.  Discussion focused on the Victoria Theater and its location as compared to Dolores Park.  Chairperson Liu reported that Committee Members, along with 19 others girls (and their adult allies) from all across San Francisco attended a GiRLFeST/UCSF Young Women’s Health Conference meeting on Saturday, April 7, 2007.  It was a large brainstorming session on creating girl-focused workshops to address finances, pregnancy, AIDS, and other incurable diseases due to sexual activity, and stress management concerns.  The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, 2007, but meeting location is “to be determined”.

 

C.                 Girls Services Directory

Policy Analyst Maufas inquired with committee members about styles of various directories.   Member Li brought her school student directory as a simple example that was not expensive.  Chairperson Liu indicated that larger print catches the eye of young people.  Member Padilla wanted art work by girls throughout the body of the directory.  Member T. Anderson indicated that although it is a useful text, it should also have poetry and life stories that relate to girls.   The Girls Services Directory should be as vibrant and lively as possible.  Members expressed interest in have the digital photos of every organization represented.  Commissioner Shorter encouraged members to clearly and strongly communicate their requests of GiRLFeST Bay Area Directors as their partners.

 

        VI.      NEW BUSINESS

 

A.                 2007 Girls Committee Projects

Members provided a recap about the UCSF Young Women’s Health Conference component and the long-term partnership with the Department.  Members discussed what types of alternative outreach capabilities are possible, considering the event will occur in the summer as opposed to the spring.  Members volunteered to focus on and report back to the whole Girls Committee.  Members Liu and T. Anderson will focus on the Health Conference piece of GiRLFeST.  P. Anderson agreed to discuss media outreach with GiRLFeST.  Commissioner Shorter mentioned inviting Commission on the Status of Women Commissioner Jing Xu Lee to discuss marketing and media outreach.

 

B.                 Girls Committee Chairperson Selections

There were no changes in the meeting chair assignments.  The schedule was finalized.

 

           VII.            PUBLIC COMMENT                                                              
Zully Bates introduced herself to the Committee and expressed her interest in working with the girls and the Department.  She is currently mentoring for La Raza and has worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District. 

 

        VIII.            A NNOUNCEMENTS                                                                 

A.                 Upcoming “Girl-Focused” Events

1.     Department of Children, Youth, and their Families (DCYF) Second Biennial State of the City’s Children’s Summit on Thursday, April 19, 2007 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.  An all-day conference that Commissioner Shorter will attend. However, she understands that many students may not be able to attend because it is on a normal school day. 

 

2.      Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco’s “Girls Day” located at the Columbia Park

Club House, 450 Guerrero Street (between 16th and 17th Street) on Saturday, April 21, 2007, 9:30a.m. – 1:30p.m.  Commissioner Shorter informed Members of an additional Boy’s and Girl’s Club Event with Mayor Newsom discussing “Youth in San Francisco,” from an email message sent to her by President Williams. The Youth Event starts at 2:00p.m. located at the Excelsior Gym Club House on Mission Street (near Geneva).

 

B.     Upcoming Commission on the Status of Women Meetings

Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at 5 p.m. – City Hall, Room 408. Chairperson Liu encouraged members to attend the Commission Meeting as soon as possible to meet all of the Commissioner.

 

C.     Next Girls Committee Meeting

            Monday, May 7, 2007 at 5 p.m. – City Hall, Room 421.
