MINUTES
Regular Meeting
Wednesday, September 26, 2001 at 5:00 P.M.

1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
President Marks called the meeting to order at 5:03 p.m. and she left at 6:10 p.m. due to the observance of Yom Kippur.
Commissioner Julie Burton Tulier was excused.
Commissioner Valerie Tulier arrived at 5:16 p.m.

2. ADOPTION OF AGENDA
m/s/c (Keehn, Miles, Unanimous) To adopt the amended agenda for the Wednesday, September 26, 2001 regular Meeting. Commissioner Keehn moved to amend agenda by moving the Wells Fargo presentation of check for the Friends from Item 8 to go before Item 3. Also, the Fire Department presentation moved from Item 6 to follow the Wells Fargo presentation.

3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
m/s/c (Murase, Tulier, Unanimous) To approve the minutes of the Regular Meeting held Wednesday, August 22, 2001.

m/s/c (Murase, Keehn, Unanimous) To approve the amended revised minutes of the special meeting held Tuesday, September 4, 2001, Commissioner Tulier was not present.

m/s/c (Murase, Keehn, Unanimous) To approve the amended revised minutes of the special meeting held Thursday, September 13, 2001, Commissioner Burton was excused.

4. PRESENTATION OF WELLS FARGO CHECK TO THE FRIENDS OF THE COMMISSION: Presented to President Susan Maher and Vice President Tama Greenberg.

5.          PRESENTATION BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT: Follow up power point presentation to the July 25, 2001 meeting regarding the consent degree. In attendance for the presentation were Fire Chief Mario Trevino and Human Resource Director, Bennie Singh. Supporting documentation was given to follow along with the power point.

6.          PRESIDENT’S REPORT
· m/s/c (Keehn, Tulier, Unanimous) To send a letter of support to U.S. Representative Barbara Lee.
· October 13, 2001 Retreat: Commissioner Tulier stated she would be unable to attend. President Marks requested that the Commissioners submit an outline of their vision for the direction they want the Commission to go. Commissioner Shorter requested the staff to come up with the ten top trends.

7. INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT
· Introduction of new Department staff: Carol Sacco and Rebecca Rolfe, Policy Analyst.
· Women Who Make a Difference Awards - report on the event that took place on September 21, 2001.
· Reported on meeting with two Commissioners from the San Mateo Commission on the Status of Women.

8.           OLD BUSINESS (DISCUSSION)
· Ann Lehman, Policy Analyst, gave a presentation to the Commission on the Work-life survey report.
· October Neighborhood Meeting: still attempting to confirm a location.

9. NEW BUSINESS
· m/s/c (Murase/Shorter/Unanimous) To endorse Walk A Mile event.
· m/s/c ( Murase/Miles/Unanimous) To co-sponsor the Hearing by Supervisor Ammiano on Child Witnessing Domestic Violence, October 17, 2001.
· m/s/c (Murase/Miles/Unanimous) To co-sponsor community event hosting Ugandan Ambassador to the United Stated, Hon. Edith Ssempala on November 9, 2001.)
· m/s/c (Miles/Murase/Unanimous) To co-sponsor the event campaign to Abolish Poverty on Wednesday, October 24, 2001, 6:00-9:00 p.m. at First Unitarian Church.)
· m/s/c (Murase/Miles/Unanimous) To list Betty Ann Ong as an honoree posthumously for this years Women Who Make a Difference Award.

10.          REPORTS          
· Commissioner Keehn gave an update on the Domestic Violence Investigation.

11. PUBLIC COMMENT
· None

12. ANNOUNCEMENT
· Friends of the Commission will be holding a reception at the Department on the Status of Women’s office at 25 Van Ness Ave., Suite 130, October 5, 2001.

13. ADJOURNMENT

Vice President Keehn called for the meeting to adjourn at 7:50 p.m.

The Board of Supervisors has amended the Sunshine Ordinance by adding provision 67A.1. The provision is effective as of January 21, 2001.

The ringing of and use of cell phones, pagers, and similar sound producing electronic devices are prohibited at this meeting. Please be advised that the Chair may order the removal from the meeting room of any person(s) responsible for the ringing or use of a cell phone, pager or other similar sound-producing electronic devices.
