All matters listed hereunder constitute a Consent Agenda and are considered to be routine by the Commission on the Status of Women.  They will be acted upon by a single roll call vote of the Commission.  There will be no separate discussion of these items unless a member of the Commission so requests, in which event the matter shall be removed from the Consent Agenda and considered as a separate item.  Members of the public may speak on each item listed on the Consent Agenda.

Action: Approve a resolution supporting emergency legislation to create a Disadvantaged Business EnterpriseContracting Program

 

b.   Letter to President Omar Hassan al-Bashir of Sudan Urging him not to Allow Women to be Used as Weapons of War

 

Action:  Approve a letter to President al-Bashir of Sudanexpressing concern about acts of violence against women as a weapon of war in the Darfurconflict and urging him to take action and to protect the women and girls of Darfur.

Action:  Approve a resolution supporting the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Golden GateParkon Saturday, October 23, 2004.

 

  1. New York State Senator Tom Duane for his Introduction of the Equal Rights Amendment for New York

 

Action:  Approve a letter of support to New YorkStateSenator Tom Duane for his introduction of the Equal Rights Amendment for New York.

 

  1. Resolution Supporting AB 3402, Protecting Exploited Children

 

Action:  Approve a resolution in support of AB 3402, Protecting Exploited Children

 

  1. Letters to Governor Schwarzenegger asking for his support for the following legislation:

 

Gender Equity/Anti-Discrimination:

 

AB 358 (Jackson) will require the State to adhere to the principles of the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) when implementing state policies and programs and in the allocation of state funding and delivery of services.

 

AB 2240 (Oropeza) will raise awareness among students and parents about their rights to equal opportunity in athletics under Title IX, the federal law prohibiting discrimination against women and girls in athletics.

 

AB 2317 (Oropeza) will impose stiffer financial penalties on employers who pay equally qualified employees at different rates.

 

AB 2404 (Steinberg) will provide the courts with Title IX-type factors to consider in determining whether cities or counties are discriminating based on gender in community athletic programs.

 

SB 1555 (Speier) will require all health insurers to include maternity coverage as part of basic health care policies.

 

Food Stamps:

 

AB 1796 (Leno) will make former drug offenders (except those convicted of selling, distributing, or manufacturing controlled substances)eligible for food stamp assistance; this bill is designed to help offenders who have served time for non-violent, drug-related crimes recover, reunite, and sustain themselves and their families.

 

CalWORKs:

 

SB 1639 (Alarcon) will increase access to quality, language-accessible education and training programs for low-income parents and foster youth.

 

Action: To approve letters to Governor Schwarzenegger asking for his support for the following legislation:  AB358, AB2240, AB2317,AB2404, SB 1555, AB 1796 and SB 1639.

Action: To approve a resolution in support of the First Annual Conference “Groundbreaking Women

On the July 28, 2004 Commission Meeting, Commissioner Shorter was nominated for President of the Commission and Commissioner Williams was nominated for Vice President.

American Sign Language interpreters and a Sound Amplification System provided upon request with 48-hour advance notice to 415-252-2570. Translation into languages other than English is also available with 48-hour notice. Limited accessible street parking available.  Accessible MUNI Metro station in the Van Ness Station and lines are J, K, L, M and N.  Accessible MUNI Lines are the 6, 7, 9, 42, 47, 49, and 71 lines.   Accessible seating for persons with disabilities (including those using wheelchairs) will be available.  Meeting proceedings available in alternative formats.  In order to assist the City's efforts to accommodate persons with severe allergies, environmental illness, multiple chemical sensitivity or related disabilities, attendees at public meetings are reminded that other attendees may be sensitive to various chemical based products.  Please help the City to accommodate these individuals.

The Board of Supervisors has amended the Sunshine Ordinance by adding provision 67A.1.  The provision is effective as of January 21, 2001.
