1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
President Miles called the meeting to order at 5:02 p.m.
Commissioner Julie Burton arrived at 5:05 p.m.
Commissioner Valerie Tulier arrived at 5:10 p.m.

2. ADOPTION OF AGENDA
m/s/c (Keehn, Marks, Unanimous) To adopt the agenda for the Wednesday, July 25, 2001, regular meeting.

3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Vice President Marks made several grammatical corrections to the agenda, which she handed to Susan Murphy, Commission Secretary, for revision.

4. PRESIDENT’S REPORT (DISCUSSION)

· Introduction of Adine Varah: Deputy City Attorney, who is replacing C/DOSW’s representative Amy Ackerman, City Attorney.
· Presentation to Dr. Arthur Coleman: Katherine Summers, Co-Chair of Bayview Hunters Point Health Task Force who has worked with Dr. Coleman for over 30 years, accepted on his behalf a Proclamation to Dr. Coleman for his services provided for over fifty years to the Bayview Hunters Point Community as a physician.
Ms. Summers was also acknowledged by Ann Lehman, Policy Analyst standing in for the Interim Director, for attending her first Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) as a member of the CEDAW Task Force.
· Executive Search Report: As part of the Executive Search Committee, President Miles announced the Search Committee would be calling a Special Meeting of the full Commission on Friday, July 27, 2001, at 5:00 p.m.

5. INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT
          (Given by Ann Lehman, Policy Analyst, on behalf of Rosario Navarrette)

· Introduction of Elaine Hung, Accountant:
· Department’s Budget - Update: Supervisor Peskin has allocated several budget items under his Add Back list. $20,000 will be given to Gum Moon for transitional housing for survivors of domestic violence. DOSW will administer $75,000 for Asia Perinatal Advocates for child abuse and domestic violence services. We will also receive $50,000 in funding for Violence Against Women Emergency Fund as well as $40,000 funding for translation of materials and notices of Commission meetings as well as translators for the neighborhood meetings. Once the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors approve, DOSW will be able to incorporate the additional funds into our budget.
· Women Who Make a Difference Awards - Awardees Report: The awardees are as follows:

Denise D’ Anne, Commissioner, Department of Building Inspection
Lynn Fang, Social Worker, Self-Help for the Elderly
Myeshia Grice, Outreach Coordinator, California Youth Connection
Juli Posadas, Director of Girls Services, Youth Guidance Center
· Bayview Hunters Point Neighborhood Meeting - Follow Up: A meeting was held with Supervisor Maxwell July 12, 2001.
· Violence Against Women (VAW) Contract Negotiations and Site Visits - Update: Winnie Xie, Administrator for the VAW grants continues to complete the contract negotiations with the VAW grantees.
· The Centralized Multilingual 24 Hour Crisis Line: Request For Proposals for the Consultant to conduct the planning process and all of the organizing related to The California Endowment grant will be issued at the end of July.
· Miscellaneous Items

6.           NEW BUSINESS (DISCUSSION)

· Mabel Ng, Deputy Executive Director, Ethics Commission, gave a presentation to the Commission regarding conflicts of interests and rules of conduct for public.
· Bennie Singh, Human Resource Director, Fire Department. Updated the Commission regarding the consent decree. The Commission extended an invitation to the newly appointed Fire Chief to return to a future Commission meeting. Commissioner Keehn suggested to Ms. Singh that a CEDAW training could be arranged.
· The Commission on the Status of Women by-laws were given to the Commissioners for their review.

7. NEW BUSINESS

· Commissioner Shorter gave an update report of the meeting with Supervisor Maxwell which she and Rosario Navarrette, Interim Executive Director attended. They discussed issues concerning health, environmental as well as educational.
· CEDAW update report was given by Commissioner Murase.
· Domestic Violence investigation update report given by Commissioner Keehn.
· Assault Sexual Task Force update report given by Commissioner Keehn.

Election of Officers

m/s (Murase/Keehn) Motioned that Commissioner Marks be considered for the office of President.

m/s (Marks/Burton) Motioned that Commissioner Keehn be considered for office of Vice President.

8.          PUBLIC COMMENT

· Jennifer Hudson, San Francisco Housing Authority, Domestic Violence Division, thanked the Commission for supporting the Domestic Violence breakfast and reiterated that continued support is needed in the October 20, 2001 event. She also commented that Rosario Navarrette did a wonderful job of speaking at the breakfast ceremony.

9. ANNOUNCEMENTS

· San Francisco National Association for the Advancement to Colored Peope (NAACP) is having a fundraising dinner and 78th anniversary celebration in honor of Human Rights Activist, Dick Gregory, Saturday, August 25, 2001, at the Hilton Hotel.
· The Fourth Annual Strike Out Violence will be held September 3, 2001, Labor Day Weekend at Pac Bell Park, Giants vs. Rockies and the tickets are $15.00.
· President Miles stated that it has been a pleasure holding office as President for the Commission on the Status of Women.
· Susan Murphy, announced that a Bayview Hunters Point Breast Cancer Survivor calendar would be released in October.

10. ADJOURNMENT

President Miles called for the meeting to adjourn at 7:30 p.m.

The Board of Supervisors has amended the Sunshine Ordinance by adding provision 67A.1. The provision is effective as of January 21, 2001.

Please be advised that the Chair may order the removal from the meeting room of any person(s) responsible for the ringing or use of a cell phone, pager or other similar sound-producing electronic devices.
