      President Shorter called the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m.

  • ADOPTION OF AGENDA

 

Executive Assistant Bernice Casey informed the Commission that Executive Director Belle Taylor-McGhee would not be in attendance and that the Executive Director’s Report was in the Commissioners’ packets for their review.  Ms. Casey also informed the Commission that Ms. Chan of the American Cancer Society would be unable to present at this evening’s meeting and would be presenting next month.

  1. PRESIDENT’S REPORT

 

President Shorter thanked Vice President Miles for sharing her story of domestic violence with the Bay Area through an article in Bay Area BusinessWomen written by Ms. Taylor-McGhee.  President Shorter said the story provided a historical record of how far domestic violence services have come over the years and the importance of continuing to support such services.

      The Executive Director’s Report was made available in written form to the Commission.

  • NEW BUSINESS

                                                                             

  1. Relay for Life: American Cancer Society          

 

Mabel Chan from the American Cancer Society was unable to attend the meeting.  Ms. Chan will make her presentation at the June COSW Meeting.

                                                                                                                                                    

Public Comment.

 

Norma Tecson expressed her concerns regarding representation in the Filipino community.  Ms. Tecson talked about women’s issues and women’s development in the Filipino community.  She said that it was important for this community to have the support of the Commission.  Ms. Tecson asked the Commission for their help.

 

Commissioner Marks moved to add to next month’s calendar an action item that would allow the Department on the Status of Women to reissue a RFQ in the amount of $10,000.00 so that Women in Dialogue could re-apply for funding.  Commissioner Evans seconded the motion.  President Shorter voted in favor of the motion.  Commissioner Williams voted against the motion.  Motion failed.

CONSENT AGENDA

 

All matters listed hereunder constitute a Consent Agenda and are considered to be routine by the Commission on the Status of Women.  They will be acted upon by a single roll call vote of the Commission.  There will be no separate discussion of these items unless a member of the Commission so requests, in which event the matter shall be removed from the Consent Agenda and considered as a separate item.  Members of the public may speak on each item listed on the Consent Agenda.

      7.   OLD BUSINESS                                           

 

a.   Girls Committee                                               

 

President Shorter talked about Supervisor Bevan Dufty’s follow-up Girls Hearing.  She had spoken to Supervisor Dufty about his ideas for the hearing.  President Shorter discussed her concerns about the large number of African-American girls within the juvenile justice system in San Francisco

 

Public Comment.

 

Rachel West from Women in Dialogue said that her organization would be appearing next week before the Board of Supervisors and that Supervisor Ammiano was willing to introduce a resolution before the Board in support of her organization.  Ms. West asked the Commission to put forth another motion of support for her organization.  She asked the Commission to recognize how many organizations had submitted testimony to the Commission on behalf of Women in Dialogue.

 

Lori Nairne, from In Defense of Prostitute Women’s Safety, said she echoed the words of Rachel West.  Ms. Nairne discussed the economical reasons her organization needed the funding.  She asked the Commission to reconsider the motion and not to ignore Commissioner Marks.

 

Chandra Redack thanked Commissioner Marks for her support and told Commissioner Williams that she was hurting the very women that helped her get into her position as Commissioner.  Ms. Redack said that the $10,000.00 was rightfully theirs and should be given to them.  She said the money had been earmarked for her organization and that they had done everything required of them to get the funding.

 

Ruth Todasco said that the motion must be added to the agenda as the project was a worthy one.  She gave some historic background on the importance of this work and how it had impacted other communities.  Ms. Todasco felt that their work was being brushed aside and the work which had been put forth was being underminded. 

 

Norma Tecson asked that her organization be added to the next agenda and stressed the importance of including the Filipino community.  Ms. Tecson said that it was an important mission of the Commission to include her organization.  She stressed the need to have a partnership.

The Board of Supervisors has amended the Sunshine Ordinance by adding provision 67A.1.  The provision is effective as of January 21, 2001.

 

The ringing of and use of cell phones, pagers, and similar sound producing electronic devices are prohibited at this meeting.  Please be advised that the Chair may order the removal from the meeting room of any person(s) responsible for the ringing or use of a cell phone, pager or other similar sound-producing electronic devices.
