Department of Elections Seeks Neighborhood Polling Places for June 5 Election

SAN FRANCISCO, Friday, February 23, 2018 – The Department of Elections will provide 583 polling places for the June 5, 2018, Consolidated Statewide Direct Primary Election.

Although the Department has already secured 516 polling places for the upcoming election, there is still a need in several San Francisco neighborhoods for well-lit, wheelchair-accessible facilities that are 300 square feet or larger. Those interested in providing a public or private space that might be suitable to accommodate voting are encouraged to contact the Department by sending an email to or calling (415) 554-4551. 

The Department works with public institutions and community members to recruit sites such as schools, firehouses, garages, community centers, and businesses to host voting on Election Day. The Department has many such partners who serve their communities year after year by hosting polling places and welcoming their neighbors to cast their vote.

The Department makes every effort to maintain the same polling places for every election. When legal requirements, availability issues, or other factors make this consistency impossible, the Department carefully considers a list of criteria for choosing a new location. These include geographic and physical access for voters, proximity to public transit, space available for voting, etc.

The Department of Elections thanks the many neighborhood polling place providers and poll workers who have already committed to help us conduct the upcoming election on June 5.
