For Immediate Release
SAN FRANCISCO, Thursday, October 13, 2016– The Department of Elections reminds San Francisco residents that the October 24 deadline to register to vote or update certain registration information for the upcoming November 8 election is quickly approaching.

San Franciscans who are not sure if they are registered to vote or whether their registration information is current are encouraged to check their registration via the Voter Registration Status Lookup tool on sfelections.org.

Register online
Registering or updating registration information takes just a few minutes, and can be done online at registertovote.ca.gov prior to midnight on October 24. Online registration is an option for all citizens who live in California.

Register in person
San Franciscans may also register in person at the Department of Elections’ office in City Hall, Room 48. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. On the registration deadline, October 24, Department personnel will help people register at the front entrance of City Hall, on Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place (Polk Street) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Register by mail
People may pick up a Voter Registration Form at most post offices, San Francisco Public Library branches, and Department of Motor Vehicles offices, complete it and mail it to the Department of Elections.  All mailed registration forms must be postmarked by Monday, October 24, for new registrants to become eligible to vote in the November election.

New citizens can register through Election Day
Those who become citizens after October 24 may register and vote at the Department of Elections office anytime up until the close of polls on Election Day, Tuesday, November 8.  New citizens must present proof of citizenship and declare that they have established residence in California. They will then be asked to complete a Voter Registration Form to receive and vote a ballot at the City Hall Voting Center and to be registered to vote in future elections. With a U.S. Citizenship and Naturalization Services swearing-in ceremony scheduled for November 2 at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, the Department of Elections looks forward to welcoming new citizens to register and vote in the November election.

Anyone with questions about registration or voting is encouraged to call the Department of Elections at (415) 554-4375, write to sfvote@sfgov.org, or visit the Department’s office in City Hall, Room 48.
