San Francisco Department of Elections: Election Results Report #6 and Ballot Processing Update

Department of Elections
City and County of San Francisco
John Arntz, Director

For Immediate Release
SAN FRANCISCO, Thursday, November 10, 2016 – The San Francisco Department of Elections issued the sixth preliminary election results report of votes cast for the November 8, 2016, Consolidated General Election.

Today’s report includes votes tallied from approximately 5,715 vote-by-mail ballots, and from a total of 25,321 cards, received before Election Day.

Voters in odd-numbered Supervisorial Districts voted using five-card ballots and voters from even-numbered Supervisorial Districts voted using four-card ballots.  This is why the number of cards processed always is greater than the number of votes cast noted in the results reports.

All results reports are posted on the Department’s website: sfelections.org/results/20161108/

The Department must still review and process vote-by-mail ballots received before or on Election Day from deliveries by the United States Postal Service (USPS), received at polling places, cast at the City Hall Voting Center, and received at the City Hall drop-off stations.

The Department will issue preliminary results reports daily around 4 p.m.

Ballot Processing Update
The Department continues to review approximately 118,000 ballots for processing.  This total includes approximately 95,000 vote-by-mail ballots and an estimated 23,000 provisional ballots.

Yesterday, the Department estimated that approximately 114,000 ballots remain for review and processing.  After this estimate was issued, the USPS delivered approximately 8,700 vote-by-mail ballots that were postmarked on or before Election Day.  Today, the Department received less than 1,000 vote-by-mail ballots that were postmarked on or before Election Day.

Initial processing will be completed by Friday’s preliminary results report so that a count of provisional ballots cast in each Supervisorial District can be made available.

The remaining unprocessed ballots consist of vote-by-mail and provisional ballots cast at polling places as well as vote-by-mail ballots received from the USPS, the City Hall Voting Center, and the City Hall ballot drop-off stations.

Vote-by-mail ballots may continue to arrive and be reviewed for counting when they are postmarked on or before Election Day and arrive by Monday, November 14.

The Department expects to continue reviewing and processing vote-by-mail ballots through early next week.  The initial review of provisional ballots began today and will continue for several more days.  The counting of provisional ballots will begin after the vote-by-mail ballots are reviewed.

VBM ballot and PV ballot processing is open to public observation, either in person at the Department’s office in City Hall or on SF Elections Live.
