Vote-by-Mail Ballots for the November 8 Election Will Arrive in Mailboxes Soon!

For Immediate Release
SAN FRANCISCO, Monday, October 3, 2016 – The Department of Elections will soon begin mailing ballots for the November 8 election to voters who have applied to vote by mail for all elections.

The Department expects the vote-by-mail ballot packets to enter the mail on Friday, October 7, for delivery to voters beginning Tuesday, October 11, after Monday’s Columbus Day holiday. Tuesday, October 11, also marks the commencement of early voting at the City Hall Voting Center.

Along with their ballots, voters will receive voting instructions with information about election deadlines, ballot return options, and how to request a replacement ballot. The voting instructions also urge voters to avoid the most common reasons that vote-by-mail ballots cannot be counted, such as late returns and signature issues.

All voters who vote by mail are encouraged to use the Vote-by-Mail Ballot Status Lookup Tool to follow their ballot as it moves through the nine steps of the election process, including the dates when:

  • a voter’s request for a vote-by-mail is processed,
  • the ballot is printed,
  • ballot cards and voting instructions are placed into an envelope for mailing,
  • the ballot packet is delivered to the post office en route to the voter,
  • the Department receives the ballot,
  • the voter’s signature on the return envelope is verified,
  • the envelope is readied for opening,
  • the ballot is removed from the envelope, and
  • the Department counts the ballot.

In situations in which the Department cannot count a ballot, the tool provides the reason and possible actions the voter can take that would allow the Department to count the ballot.
