Poll worker training resources banner image.

Poll worker training is conducted each election as mandated by California Elections Code and guidelines provided by the Secretary of State's Training Task Force. We hold approximately 130 training classes to train over 3,000 poll workers.

Different class curricula are developed to support the training of New and Experienced Students, Clerks, and Inspectors. In addition to classes conducted in English, the Department provides supplementary online courses in Chinese and Spanish.

Classes last from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the job assignment. All poll workers are required to attend a training class prior to working on Election Day.

Training Topics

  • Rights of voters under provisions of the Voting Rights Act and the Help American Vote Act (HAVA) including access rights for linguistic minorities, voters with disabilities, and other protected;
  • General customer service, including cultural competency and adequate awareness of diverse cultures and languages that may be encountered by poll workers during the course of Election Day;
  • Information on how to offer and provide assistance to voters with disabilities;
