  4. Select the “one-time” or “recurring” contribution type and click Next.
  5. Select Review.

  2. Select Direct Deposit on the “Account Balance” tile.
  3. Click Get Started.
  4. Select “Attest” to confirm you’re setting up direct deposit from each paycheck.
  5. Enter your information, then click Next to review, then
  6. Click Submit to generate your direct deposit routing and account numbers.
  7. Either enter that information into your payroll system or work with your employer to set up an additional payment option.

Using the K2C paper Direct Deposit form

  1. Visit the following website: https://www.sfgov.org/k2c/my-account/how-make-deposit

Stop Old Deposits Still Going to Citibank

To ensure your deposits are not rejected, please complete the steps below as soon as possible. After October 31st, any contributions will be returned.  We ask you to share this with anyone friends or family who may be making contributions as well.

  1. Bill Pay - login to your bank online and cancel any recurring payments
    1. K2C recommends cancelling existing Bill Payments (since they have your old account number and Citibank information) and setting up contributions online in K2C’s new portal.
  2. Direct Deposit - notify your employer to stop payroll deductions to K2C or cancel any ACH initiated deposits from your bank account.
    1. Deposits labeled as direct deposit are usually set up through your employer’s payroll system.  You must notify them to stop these going to Citibank. You can create a new direct deposit form for payroll deduction in K2C’s new portal and provide this to your employer.
    2. Contributions that appear as direct deposits may include deposits made via ACH from your own bank account.  If this is the case, make sure to cancel any ACH contributions directly with your bank.
  3. Mail - halt mailing any personal checks or money orders to Citibank P.O Box.
    1. Do not send any checks or use pre-paid envelopes that includes Citibank’s P.O Box.
    2. Beside personal checks, Bill Pay often sends physical checks to Citibank, so you might need to cancel these directly with your bank.
    3. After October 31st, any physically mailed checks or Bill Payments, will be sent back to the sender’s address.  You may be able to deposit these into a student’s bank account if it was made payable to them or your own, if they are a minor. Contact your bank to see how you might deposit or cancel any of these returned to you.
  4. Branch Level - do not make in-person deposits at Citibank branches
    1. Alternatively, you can deposit cash and money orders at SF City Hall.

NOTE: Deposits sent to Citibank before October 31 will still be transferred to Vestwell, but may take a few weeks to appear in the new K2C portal. You can continue viewing your student’s Citibank balance here: https://mysavingsaccount.com/account/k2c/log-in/registration

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did K2C change program managers?

K2C's contract with Citibank was ending. The City and County of San Francisco reviewed several companies and chose Vestwell to manage K2C going forward.

Who is Vestwell?

Vestwell is a financial technology company that powers education and savings programs for individuals, families, employers, and state governments. Vestwell provides modern account technology designed to make saving easier through intuitive digital tools, enhanced security, mobile access, and convenient contribution options.

Does this change what K2C is or how it works for my family?

No. K2C is still the same program with the same goal — helping your child save toward college. What's changing is who manages the account behind the scenes, the online portal, and a few account details.

Do I have a new account number?

Yes. Your new account number is 415 plus your student's SFUSD ID. Example: 415123456789. Students attending district-affiliated charter schools should request their SFUSD Student ID from SFUSD’s Enrollment Center (call 415-241-6085) or their school‘s administrator. This number is different from a charter-issued student ID or their state-wide student ID number (SSID).

Is my child's savings safe during this change?

Yes. Your account balance, $50 starter deposit, and any incentives you've earned are not affected and will carry over automatically.

What if I have more than one child with a K2C account?

If you have more than one child with a K2C account, each child will have their own new account number.

Will my bank statement look different?

Yes. Contributions and transfers will show up as “Vestwell” going forward, instead of the previous name.

Will my contribution and transaction history carry over?

Yes.

When does the transition happen?

The switch to Vestwell will be complete soon. Check back on September 22, 2026 for an update.

Will I lose access to my account?

Starting 9/5, transactions will not be recorded in the current system and you will see new transactions in the new K2C portal.  Note, transactions made between 9/5 – 9/15 will likely appear 2-3 weeks after the system goes live.

What happens to contributions scheduled during the access-paused window?

Any contributions already scheduled during this time will process automatically once the transition is complete — no action needed.

Will I be notified when my new account is ready?

Yes, you'll get an email as soon as your new account is available.

Do I need to do anything right now?

Pause all deposits & contributions.

Do I need to update Bill Pay?

Before the transition, you do not need to stop your Bill Pay payments. We will share new instructions for updating your Bill Pay when they become available.

How do I log in to my new account?

  1. Go to vestwell.com/signup/k2c/retrieve and enter your student's SFUSD ID and date of birth,
  2. Create a new login with your email and a new password, and

What information will I need on hand to log in?

Your student's SFUSD ID and date of birth, an email address, and either a phone number or an authenticator app for the security step.

Is there a deadline to log in and register?

No, there is no deadline to log in and register.

    What's new in my account?

Making contributions directly from the portal (one-time or recurring), savings goals you can track, and direct deposit from your paycheck.

Can I set up direct deposit from my paycheck?

Yes, directly from the new account portal.

Is there a reward for registering my new account?

Yes — a $20 incentive for completing registration on your new Vestwell account.

What's the deadline and are there any eligibility rules for the $20?

Register for the first time or login to view your balance once a school year and we will reward each student's K2C account with a $20 incentive.

Does this affect my CalKIDS money?

    No impact to CalKIDS.

Does this affect my 529 plan?

    No impact to 529.

What if my student has already graduated?

If your student has already graduated, please visit our Graduating Students page to claim YOUR money.

What if we moved out of San Francisco or my child transferred out of SFUSD?

If your family moved out of the district, please visit our Close an Account page for more information.

What if my account is already closed?

You can email k2c@sfgov.org if you have any questions about your closed account. If you want to keep saving for your student's future, consider opening an account with California 529 ScholarShare or another 529 provider.  If they are eligible, they can also still benefit from the state's CalKIDS scholarship account (up to $100 for newborns & $500-$1,500 for school-age public school students).
