Asthma Task Force Environmental Committee Meeting of June 5, 2008

MINUTES

    1)       Planning recruitment of Representative Stakeholders for Special Topics and  NCHH Healthy Homes Trainings scheduled for September and October  (30 minutes)

We have lined up Dennis Jordan of Alameda County Lead Poisoning Prevention Program to teach the 2-day National Center for Healthy Housing curriculum entitled "Essentials for Healthy Homes Practitioners".   Our target audience is health workers, community organizers and housing advocates with clients who have substandard housing conditions, including health professionals such as public health nurses and clinic staff.  Karen will finish room reservations with State Bldg, coordinating with Mark Leno's office.  Breathe CA contract will pay for Dennis' fee.  Anjali will organize flyer and outreach when details are finalized.

Karen is working with LaCroix Davis firm to customize a course for SF property owners, managers and building professionals on home performance issues that affect healthy housing conditions.  Ben Heckman works for this firm as an industrial hygienist, and has previously produced a Mold Prevention and Remediation class for DPH (Karen).  Next steps are to finalize curriculum, and to find dates and locations that work for some hands on exercises with thermographic cameras, etc.  Then marketing to target audience.  Breathe CA contract will pay for LaCroix Davis fee.

We want to offer both classes for free, and Karen will figure out a way to cover refreshment expenses for both, and room costs if needed.

2)       Report back from Karen’s meetings with Ventilation Consultant Judy Roberson (15 min)

Ms. Roberson specializes in residential ventilation, and Ray Manion heard her talk at SFE entitled "Putting the "V"" back in HVAC".  She was very validating of the direction we had taken in promoting healthy homes, and will be able to help us fine tune our code amendments under her PG&E consultant role.

    3)       Healthy Housing Legislative Proposals; status with City Attorney; link to publishing Guide (10 minutes)

Still awaiting draft legislation from Deputy City Attorney.  Guide will incorporate proposed or adopted legislation. Ideal if stakeholders at Fall trainings could act as reviewers for draft Guide.

    4)       Possible policy collaboration with Cal Broomhead, SFE re. Home Performance Testing and Healthy Housing task force within City’s GreenBuilding/ HOPE SF advisory groups (15 min)  Ray Manion reported on the scope of the project proposed by Cal Broomhead to PG&E, still awaiting feedback on funding from PG&E.

5)       Themes of Future ATF Funding Requests:  Disparities in Risk Factors and Uncontrolled Asthma; Toxic Use Reduction (collaboration with SFE); Housing Rights for Clinicians and Patients (30 min)  Topics discussed were for reduction in staffing for ATF, reduction in number of meetings of full ATF, defining future emphasis for housing issues affecting people with asthma.

Group will not meet again until September 2008.  Meeting will be announced at that time.
