Find HUD (Department  of Housing and Urban Development) certified services for first-time home buyers.  The following organizations will connect you to one-on-one homeownership counselors and workshops.  The trainings and counseling can help you:

  • Assess how expensive a home you could afford to purchase
  • Make a plan to improve your credit so that a bank will be willing to lend you money for your home purchase
  • Make a plan to increase or document your income so that a bank will be willing to lend you money for your home purchase
  • Figure out if you qualify for any programs that can provide you with money or other help for your purchase
  • Find a reliable mortgage lender and real estate agent
  • Understand the home purchase process, including pre-approvals, good faith deposits, good faith estimates, appraisals, inspections, taxes, insurance, and the escrow process
  • Learn how to avoid foreclosure
