Members: Christine Huynh, Kyron Covington, Sarah Armstrong, Nicholas Persky, Mia Shackelford

1. Call to Order and Roll Call

The meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. Commissioner present: Christine Huynh, Kyron Covington, Nicholas Persky (arrived at 5:10 p.m.), and Mia Shackelford. Commissioner absent: Sarah Armstrong. Staff present: Phimy Truong. There was quorum.

2. Approval of Agenda (Action Item)

Commissioner Covington, seconded by Commissioner Shackelford, moved to approve the agenda. This motion was approved by acclamation.

3. Approval of Minutes (Action Item)

A. October 22, 2012
Commissioner Shackelford, seconded by Commissioner Covington, moved to approve the minutes to the meeting of October 22, 2012. This motion was approved by acclamation.

 

4. Public Comment on Items not on Agenda (Discussion Only)

There were none.

5. Business (All Items to Follow Discussion and Possible Action)

A. Check in

Commissioners each shared a positive and negative moment from their week.

B. Debrief Summer Jobs+ presentation and feedback

Commissioners then spent a majority of the meeting time debriefing the Summer Jobs+ presentation at the full Youth Commission meeting of November 5th. Commissioners compared notes and reviewed the feedback they received from the presenters and service providers.

C. Review, research, and discussion of committee priorities

Commissioners spent some time reviewing and researching their committee priorities. Commissioners then worked on drafting a resolution on urging for the continuation of a Summer Jobs+ in summer of 2013; and incorporated some of the feedback from the presentation into their work.

D. Create S.M.A.R.T. goals for priorities

Committee members then created the following S.M.A.R.T. goals for their priorities:

- make an action plan for researching the Deferred Action by December 3rd, 2012 (Kyron and Persky)
- research the alignment of youth employment programs in San Francisco (Mia)
- research DCYF’s plans for a universal youth employment program application (Christine)
- finish resolution on Summer Jobs+ 2013 by the end of November; forward resolution out to youth employment service providers and department staff for feedback, with the goal of introducing resolution at a full Youth Commission meeting in December

6. Items to Report to Executive Committee (Action Item)

Commissioner Persky, seconded by Commissioner Covington, moved to report the updated timeline for committee priorities, and status of Summer Jobs+ resolution to the Executive Committee. This motion was approved by acclamation.

7. Executive Committee Report (Discussion Only)

Commissioners Shackelford and Persky gave a brief update on the Commission’s legislative work.
