- WritersCorps Report
Ms. Heller introduced Antoinette Osborne who previewed her winning poem for the Martin Luther King, Jr. FreeWrite contest, "Where Were You" and Luz Aburto a WritersCorps intern.
She summarized success with previous publication sales and excitement for a forthcoming WritersCorps publication by Jossey-Bass and discussions with Chronicle Books for a potential book collaboration and greeting card collaboration. She also highlighted the intern program, the feasibility study funded by an NEA grant, and upcoming events.
Commissioner Johnston made the following motion.
Motion for the Director of Cultural Affairs to enter into a contract with Katherine Gin to teach photography classes for WritersCorps youth and provide coordination for 2005 photography-related projects in an amount not to exceed $15,000 from DCYF.
The motion passed unanimously.
- Arts Education Report
Ms. Nemzoff summarized potential growth in arts education as discussions with First Five Commission and DCYF develop. Commissioner Johnston would like to publicize that the Arts Commission is involved in arts education.
- Cultural Center Report
Ms. Nemzoff introduced Somarts Director Jack Davis who showed the architectural design for adding four exit doors to the building so that the maximum capacity of the building can increase.
Commissioner Johnston made the following motion.
Motion to approve architectural drawings for four ADA compliant exit doors at Somarts Cultural Center.
The motion passed unanimously.
At the request of the seven cultural centers, Ms Nemzoff asked for input on how Commissioners would like to hear reports from each of the centers. Commissioner Brown recommended we hold CAE meetings at each of the centers with buildings. Commissioner Mirikitani said the presentations should highlight a performance piece and be for a specific amount of time with room for questions. Commissioner Johnston agreed and added that 25 Van Ness should be the place for the virtual centers to present.
- Program Director’s Report
Ms. Nemzoff introduced the following two motions and explained that Chinatown Beacon Center is changing their fiscal sponsor from Wu Yee to Community Educational Services.
Commissioner Mirikitani made the following motion.
Motion to revise Resolution No. 0913-04-188 by replacing “Chinatown Beacon Center” with “Community Educational Services on behalf of Chinatown Beacon Center.” The revised Resolution shall read as follows:
Motion to approve the Programs in the Community (PIC) grant to the following PIC grantee organizations, recommended by the PIC review panel, from the 2004-2005 Grants for the Arts Fund:
Central City Hospitality House $15,000
Programs for People $15,000
San Francisco Women Against Rape $12,222
Pacific News Service $14,000
Rose Resnick Lighthouse for the Blind & Visually Impaired $10,500
Eldergivers $14,000
Filipino American Development Foundation $14,000
St. John’s Educational Thresholds Center $14,000
Community Educational Services on behalf of Chinatown Beacon Center $10,000
Richmond District Neighborhood Center $10,000
TOTAL $128,722
