Minutes

Meeting began at 4:45 PM with Commissioners PJ Johnston, Ethel Pitts-Walker and Jose Cuellar in attendance

  1. WritersCorps Report
    Ms. Heller described three upcoming events: the Martin Luther King, Jr. FreeWrite at Civic Auditorium (Jan 16), a reading at Intersection for the Arts (Jan 31), and a reading at the Park Branch library (Jan 26).

    She reported that WritersCorps will host students from the Santa Fe Indian School. Planned events include a visit to Log Cabin, Newcomer High, and Everett Middle School; a retreat with the WritersCorps interns; a tour of Chinatown; and a reading at San Francisco State University with other Native American poets.

    The 2006 WritersCorps publication, Solid Ground, will be launched April 7th at opening night of the San Francisco Giants home season at SBC Park. Two youth will read behind home plate, bookmarks with photos of two Giants players with WritersCorps youth will be passed out at the gate, and a fundraiser/reception/book release party will be held at the stadium prior to the game. Staff seeks Commission support for the fundraiser and will be talking about selling tickets in upcoming meetings.

  2. Arts Education Report
    Ms. Nemzoff reported on the upcoming professional development days at the Golden Gate Club in the Presidio. She also gave updates on First Five and the Arts Education Master Plan, which should be launched during the Youth Arts Festival in June 2006.
  3. Cultural Center Report
    Ms. Nemzoff reported that facilities maintenance is an ongoing challenge and looks forward to working with President Johnston to address some of the issues in the coming year.
  4. Cultural Equity Grant
    Motion to approve the following recommended grants in Creative Space for 2005-06 totalling $155,160:

    Brava Theater Center/Brava! For Women in the Arts $11,660
    Cartoon Art Museum $9,000
    Ninth Street Independent Film Center $20,000

    San Francisco Camerawork $20,000
    San Francisco Performing Arts Library & Museum $10,000
    New Conservatory Theatre Center $18,860

    Approved unanimously
