Meeting Minutes

Meeting called to order at 4:45.

In attendance were Commissioners PJ Johnston, Janice Mirikitani, Maya Draisin, Jose Cuellar; and staff Richard Newirth, Judy Nemzoff, and Robynn Takayama.

  1. Cultural Equity Grant Program Director Report
    Judy Nemzoff reported for Prudy Kohler, Acting Program Director for CEG, who was unable to attend the meeting. There are two upcoming panel meetings, Cultural Equity Initiatives-Level Two on September 14 and Cultural Equity Initiatives-Level One on October 19. 

    Commissioner Draisin asked how the search for a new program director was going. Mr. Newirth said the specific job requirements limited the applicant pool.

    Commissioner Mirikitani asked about the efforts to find an African American Commissioner and to replace the two positions still vacant. Commissioner Cuellar suggested that people ask potential candidates for Commissioner for suggestions for other candidates.

  2. Community Arts and Education Program Director Report
    Ms. Nemzoff said this is a big year for the Community Arts and Education program with increased funding .

    Ms. Nemzoff announced the launch of the Arts Education Master Plan and the upcoming Arts Providers Resource Fair on September 28, 2006. The press launch will be from 10:30 a.m. to11:30 a.m. at the Performing Arts Library and Museum. The Fair will be held in the Davies Symphony Hall lobby from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

    Commissioner Mirikitani made the following motion: Motion to approve payment to the War Memorial to support the Third Annual Arts Education Resource Fair in an amount not exceeding $2,500 from Youth Arts Fund. The motion passed unanimously.

    Commissioner Mirikitani made the following motion: Motion to approve payment to the San Francisco Foundation Community Initiatives Fund for an arts education intern not to exceed $6,500 from Youth Arts Fund.
    The motion passed unanimously.

    Ms. Nemzoff reported that WritersCorps will be "right-sizing." The current program associate Gloria Yamato will return to being a WritersCorps teacher at a new site in Visitacion Valley. Program Manager Janet Heller will return from maternity leave and work at 80% time.

    Ms. Nemzoff added that with new funding, we hope to increase the PIC grant programs to support youth programs.

    Ms. Nemzoff summarized the progress begun with the consultation with Ernest Mark, and continuing in monthly meetings working with the Cultural Center directors. Together the Centers laid out priorities for evaluation criteria which will be incorporated into next year’s evaluation. The evaluation will be performed by staff with Commissioners’ approval. Commissioner Cuellar said he’d like to see active centers as an evaluation priority. 

  3. Meeting was adjourned at 5:40 p.m.
