  1. Community Arts and Education Program Director Report
Ms. Nemzoff introduced Ms. London Breed, executive director of the African American Art and Culture Complex (“AAACC”), and Ms. Cheryl Davis, a collaborative partner and volunteer with AAACC. Ms. Breed summarized upcoming events at the center, new program developments for teens, and facility projects. Ms. Davis presented youth projects including photos, a business plan, and greeting cards.

Commissioner Walker appreciated the emphasis on youth and congratulated Ms. Breed for the revival of the center. Commissioner Cuellar echoed that sentiment and encouraged music programming at the center where youth learn how to play instruments.

Ms. Nemzoff talked about progress on developing the Pre-School for All Artist Initiative, a new program in Community Arts and Education.

She said the big challenge in the CAE program is managing the various components of the cultural center program, especially with the loss of a staff position.

Commissioner Walker said she would like a special meeting of the Community Arts, Education, and Grants program for more detailed analysis of the program. She would like to understand how the centers spend their money and what is needed. She would also like to have someone from the Department of Public Works at a meeting

Commissioner Johnston agreed that other city agencies should be at a meeting to provide a city-wide context. He would like the center directors’ opinion of how to deal with facilities maintenance.

Commissioner Walker said she’d like to be more informed before having the cultural center directors join the meeting.

SomArts’ director, Jack Davis, said the San Francisco Arts Commission should act as a city advocate to expedite processes.

Commissioner Johnston said he would like information prepared for the next meeting before forming an ad hoc committee.

Commissioner Walker asked that the Board of Supervisors be part of the discussion.

Commissioner Johnston made the following motion:
Motion to approve the Programs in the Community (PIC) grant to Girls 2000 for $17,000 from the 2005-2006 Grants for the Arts Fund.
    The motion passed unanimously.

Commissioner Johnston made the following motion:
Motion for the Director of Cultural Affairs to enter into contract with the following individuals to teach creative writing in the 2005-2006 WritersCorps program funded by Department of Children, Youth and Their Families, San Francisco Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Zellerbach Family Fund, Department of Juvenile Probation, and Youth Arts Fund:

    Alberto Palomar $35,000
    Meroe Elahi $30,000
    Andrew Saito $24,000
    Chrissy Anderson $24,000
    Katharine Gin $49,000
    The motion passed unanimously.

Commissioner Cuellar made the following motion:
Motion to increase the South of Market Cultural Center’s 2005-2006 grant agreement from $691,772 to $777,642 (an increase of $85,870 for sub-grantee Native American Cultural Center) from Cultural Center Hotel Tax Funds, contingent upon completion of revisions to NACC’s Management and Programming Plan.
    The motion passed unanimously.

  2. New Business
Commissioner Johnston said he’d like to see if there is a better meeting time for CAEG. Ms. Nemzoff said she hoped the meetings could return to two hours in length.
