President Johnston called for the Interim Director’s Report to begin the meeting, and had no additional report beyond his update on the search for a new Director of Cultural Affairs.

  2. Interim Director’s Report
Ms. Gonchar began her report with an update on the 2007-2008 budget. The agency sustained a small cut of $23,657. The Senior Museum Registrar position for the Civic Art Collection was approved, the full 10% increase in Hotel Tax Fund money will go to the Cultural Centers and to Cultural Equity Grants. The Board of Supervisors added back $550,000 for neighborhood arts and $100,000 for the International Arts Festival. Several ideas for the neighborhood arts addback were discussed, including a free citywide music festival modeled after the Parisian Fete de la Musique, taking place at the summer solstice in large and small public spaces all over the city, and featuring a wide variety of artists. This led to a discussion of some of the differences between producing a one-time event or project and supporting an ongoing program or an annual event, and of the appropriate role of the Arts Commission in relation to local arts organizations and arts producers.

Ms. Nemzoff reported on a Convention and Visitors Bureau (“CVB”) banner series currently hanging in the Lower Haight, featuring local artists. She explained that the CVB would like to expand the campaign to hang artist-designed banners all around the city, and recommended that Commissioners take a look at the banners on lower Haight Street.

  3. Update on Search for Director of Cultural Affairs
Ms. Gonchar left the meeting as President Johnston began the discussion. He reported that the founder of the search firm, Ralph Andersen and Associates, had just died. Principal Heather Renschler will contact the Executive Committee members soon to set up individual interviews, and plans to attend the Committee’s August meeting. She is working with staff on an initial draft of the job description.

  4. Public Comment
    There was no public comment.

  5. Adjournment
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:37 p.m.
