MEETING OF THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE
OF THE ARTS COMMISSION

Monday, October 27, 2014
3:00 p.m.
25 Van Ness Avenue, Suite 70

Draft Minutes

Committee Chair Roberto Ordeñana called the meeting to order at 3:12 p.m.

  1. Roll Call
    Commissioners Present

    Roberto Ordeñana, Chair
    Simon Frankel
    Janine Shiota

    Commissioners Absent
    None

  2. Public Comment
    There was no public comment.

  3. Nomination of Candidates
Commissioner Ordeñana thanked everyone for their participation, and reported that he had heard from several Commissioners in response to his request for comments and recommendations. He reported that some had recommended that Commissioners Beltran and Schnair continue in their roles as President and Vice President. Commissioners Chew and Shiota had been named as potential Vice Presidential nominees, along with himself. While he was honored, he withdrew his own name because of his role as Chair of this Committee.

Commissioner Ordeñana reported that he had confirmed the willingness of President Beltran and Vice President Schnair to continue in their offices. He asked Mr. DeCaigny to discuss the working relationship between himself as the Director of Cultural Affairs and the President and Vice President. Mr. DeCaigny discussed the considerable time commitment required, even beyond what is asked of other Commissioners, and the variety of internal and external roles they are asked to play as leaders and representatives of the Commission.

Mr. DeCaigny described the particular strengths of both Commissioner Schnair and Commissioner Beltran, who had served as Interim Director, and he reported that he had a very good working relationship with both of them.

The Committee discussed the idea of succession planning and how it is managed in other jurisdictions and in the private sector. They acknowledged that any such planning for the Arts Commission must take into account the critical fact that all of the Commissioners serve at the pleasure of the Mayor. The Committee discussed at length whether it was wiser to keep the same leadership or to propose a change, and noted that it can take a full year to really understand the cycle of budgeting and other agency activities, and that longevity helps in developing relationships with the communities the Commission serves.

There was no public comment, and the following motion was unanimously approved.

Motion to nominate JD Beltran as President and Abby Sadin Schnair as Vice President of the Arts Commission.

  4. Adjournment
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 3:48 p.m.
