President Ordeñana called the meeting to order at 12:36 p.m.

  1. Roll Call

    Commissioners Absent:
    JD Beltran (joined the meeting at 12:58 p.m.)

    President Ordeñana announced virtual meeting instructions.

    Commission Secretary Alyssa Ventre announced public comment instructions.

    There was no public comment.

     
  3. Director’s Report
    (6:30)

    Director Remington reported on a number of activities including the recent budget hearings and the opening of Monumental Reckoning. He also shared details regarding an upcoming artist residency program and a few open public art opportunities. He announced that Susan Pontious retirement on June 30.

    Commissioners requested an audit of Prop E disbursements, an update on the ArtsHub, and a budget presentation to the full Commission.

  1. Arts Commission Donation
    (17:55)

    Deputy Director Catapang provided background information on the donation.

    Commissioners asked about any potential issues with the donation. Deputy Director Catapang said he is working with the City Attorney to follow the proper procedures.

    Commissioner Beltran joined the meeting at 12:58 p.m.

    Commissioner Walker, seconded by Commissioner Shiota moved to approve the motion as presented: Motion to approve the acceptance of one donation to the Arts Commission totaling $160,000 to support the Dr. Maya Angelou Sculpture Project. The donation is through the Schwab Charitable’s The Miner/Anderson Fund.

    There was no public comment.

    The motion unanimously carried by the following vote:
    Ayes: Ordeñana, Shiota, Beltran, Collins, Walker.

     
  2. 2021-2023 SFAC Grant Review Panelists
    (25:20)

    Deputy Director Lee explained that the motion would allow the following artists to participate in the grant review panel and provided background information on the grant review process.  

    Commissioner Beltran, seconded by Commissioner Collins moved to approve the motion as presented: Motion to approve the following panelists to serve, as selected by staff, on SFAC review panels for the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 fiscal years:

    Patrick Makuakāne 
    Joanna Haigood

    There was no public comment.

    The motion unanimously carried by the following vote:
    Ayes: Ordeñana, Shiota, Beltran, Collins, Walker.
     
  3. Nomination for Advisory Committee of Street Artists and Crafts Examiners
    (29:15)

    Deputy Director Lee gave an overview of the Advisory Committee requirements and the process for filling vacancies.

    Commissioner Beltran, seconded by Commissioner Shiota moved to approve the motion as presented: Motion to recommend to the Mayor two (2) candidates to fill two (2) vacant positions on the Advisory Committee of Street Artists and Crafts Examiners: Mai Kong and Gina Zetts.

    There was no public comment.

    The motion unanimously carried by the following vote:
    Ayes: Ordeñana, Shiota, Beltran, Collins, Walker.
     
  4. Racial Equity Update
    (32:25)

    Senior Racial Equity & Policy Analyst Sandra Panopio gave an update on the following Racial Equity Action Plan deliverables: a reminder to fill out the commissioner recommendation form, an introduction of the commissioner info survey, and the status of the land acknowledgment resolution and process.

    Commissioners shared their support for creating a land acknowledgement process and the importance of continuing to build partnerships with the American Indian community.

  5. New Business and Announcements
    (39:00)

    Commissioner Walker requested an update on the Arts- Hub project.

    Commissioner Collins thanked Director Remington to provide support about issues and opportunities around their collection.

    Commissioner Beltran requested an audit of the Prop E funding.

    There was no public comment.
     
  6. Adjournment
    There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 1:18 p.m.
