- Public Comment
Ann Treboux said that Arts Commission staff would not allow her to enter the building. She complained about a recent Street Artists Committee meeting she had attended, about the quality of the audio recording and that her public comment at that meeting was not properly reported. She corrected the Chair when he addressed her as Ms. Datesh, explaining that she had changed her name from Paula Datesh because she wished to divorce herself from the Street Artists Program.
There was no further public comment.
- Nomination of Candidates
Commissioner Collins thanked everyone for their participation, and reported that he had heard from several Commissioners in response to his request for comments and nominations, and he appreciated their forthrightness. He reported that a common theme was a tremendous vote of confidence in the Commission’s leadership, including President, Vice President and Committee Chairs, as well as the Director of Cultural Affairs and the Deputy Director. Another theme was the relationship between stability and transition, and the importance of developing “bench strength,” a corps of Commissioners with leadership experience ready to step into leadership roles in the coming years.
The Committee agreed with the statement of confidence in the current President and Vice President, and also agreed with the importance of developing bench strength in the Commission. They expressed their appreciation for the commitment, passion and time the President and Vice President have given to the City in their service on the Commission. Mr. DeCaigny also expressed his appreciation for the Commissioners and how much they have taught him in their service to the City. He highlighted Vice President Schnair’s willingness to step up to the duties of her office after a relatively short tenure on the Commission. He also discussed both the President’s and the Vice President’s responsibilities in preparing for the full Commission meetings, and in serving on the Executive Committee along with their other Committee responsibilities.
The Committee also discussed the importance of Commissioners’ rotating through the various subject matter committees to have a strong understanding of the full scope of the agency’s activities.
The Committee agreed that it would serve continuity to retain the President, and to nominate someone else as Vice President; Commissioner Frankel nominated Commissioner Ordeñana. The Committee discussed his experience on the Civic Design Review Committee and the Community Arts, Education and Grants Committee. The Committee noted that all Commissioners occasionally have to recuse themselves from discussing some issues because of conflicts of interest.
The Committee also discussed the value of having an ex-President on the Commission to serve as a mentor to a new President when elected, and they reviewed the duties of both the President and the Vice President.
There was no further discussion by the Committee, and there was no public comment. The following motion was unanimously approved.
Motion to nominate JD Beltran as President and Roberto Ordeñana as Vice President of the Arts Commission.
- Adjournment
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 2:49 p.m.
