Discussion only about recent work by the San Francisco Homeless Animals
Coalition, a working group with representatives of rescue groups,
shelters, and other interested parties, that is discussing programs
needed to reduce the number of animals euthanized at city shelters, and
how to implement those programs. The Coalition is not considering
legislative approaches or ordinances that would require action by the
Board of Supervisors, but is focusing on programs and ideas that can be
accomplished collaboratively among the represented groups. Justin
Pinkerton, from FixSF, the group that is spearheading the Coalition,
will give the presentation. [Discussion only] [Commissioner Stephens]
B)
Election of Commission Officers – Discussion and possible action to
elect Commission officers, including Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary.
Duties of each position will be explained. [Discussion/Action Item]
[Commissioner Stephens]
6. Unfinished Business
A)
Discussion and possible action to send a letter to the Board of
Supervisors, with copies sent to the Recreation and Park Commission and
Joint Zoo Committee, to advise them of relatively inexpensive improvements
that would address animal welfare concerns at the San Francisco Zoo in
the following ways: 1) expand and improve the Baird's tapir exhibit into
neighboring empty exhibit by creating an opening in the wall between
the two exhibits to give the tapir more space and access to a second
pool; 2) relocate solitary giant eland to a more appropriate facility
where he can join a herd social structure; 3) expand the black rhino
exhibit into the giant eland exhibit once he is relocated; 4) expand the
black rhino exhibit into the empty adjacent hippo exhibit to provide
more space for the rhinos; 5) create full-flight aviaries for all birds
at the Zoo; and 6) commit to only taking in rescued exotic birds for all
future acquisitions. [Discussion/Action Item] [Commissioner Gerrie]
