[Discussion/Action Item] [Commissioner Aldridge]

6. New Business
A) Discussion and possible action to send a letter to the Board of Supervisors urging them to publicize National Dog Bite Prevention Week in their newsletters and also on SFGov TV, and to recognize it at their meeting. National Dog Bite Prevention Week is May 20-26, 2012. In the words of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Man and woman's best friend bites more than 4.7 million people a year, and key experts believe that public education can help prevent these bites…Each year, 800,000 Americans seek medical attention for dog bites; half of these are children. Of those injured, 386,000 require treatment in an emergency department and about 16 die. The rate of dog bite-related injuries is highest for children ages 5 to 9 years, and the rate decreases as children age. Almost two thirds of injuries among children ages four years and younger are to the head or neck region.” (http://www.cdc.gov/HomeandRecreationalSafety/Dog-Bites/dogbite-factsheet.html)
This educational push to protect children (and adults) can begin in San Francisco with actions from the Board of Supervisors. There are excellent links to material on the CDC website (as above), and on the website of the American Veterinary Medical Association, AVMA.org under Public Health…more…Dog Bite Prevention. The AVMA also has an educational coloring book for children that can be printed out free. [Discussion/Action Item] [Commissioner Hemphill]
