A) The high mortality of Western Gulls in the Pier 94 wetlands area of the Port of San Francisco was discussed at Animal Control and Welfare Commission meetings on October 14, 2010 and on February 10, 2011. Necropsies in 2010 on collected dead birds had revealed aspergillosis, a fungal infection, as a primary suspect, although in previous investigations rodenticides and oiling were found to be strong contributing factors. After the February 2011 meeting where CA Fish and Game gave updated information as did wildlife volunteers, funding was provided by the Port of SF and by Recology to further research the cause of these deaths. Stori Oates (Wildlife Health Center at UC Davis and the Department of Fish and Game) will present the Pier 94 Gull Mortality Investigation Final Report, the results of a study done from September 2011 to February 2012, involving scientists from several organizations, and utilizing sampling from both urban and natural sites to study Aspergillus spore distribution. [Commissioner Hemphill]
