Minutes of January 6, 2000

The Immigrant Rights Commission (IRC) meeting was held on Thursday, January 6, 2000 in the Hearing Room 416 at 5:00 p.m. in the City Hall.

Members Present Renee Saucedo, Penelope Chronis, Renato Ecarma, Isabel Huie, Marie Lorraine Mallare, Dale Jimenez, Thou Ny and Richard Ow.

Members Absent Samuel Assefa, Anita Friedman, Philip Nguyen, Natividad Ramirez, Martin Schenker, Lee Sprague, Nam Thai.

Others Present Dang Pham, Executive Director of the IRC, Mario Kashou, Deputy City Attorney, Emil DeGuzman, Human Rights Commission

Minutes The minutes of the December 2, 1999 meeting was adopted by the Commission.

Presentation: Mr. Emil DeGuzman of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission provided the Commission with the situation of Christopher Grion Camat. Ms. Camat is a Filipino immigrant who want to return to his homeland to participate in his country’s Olympic Boxing Team, but he was warned by the INS that he might not able to return to the United States due to his pending immigration status. Mr. DeGuzman also asked the Commission to voice the support on behalf of Mr. Camat.

Other The Commission unanimously voted to follow-up with the Mayor’s Office regarding the meeting between the Mayor and the Regional Director of INS as Mayor Brown promised during the meeting with the community few months ago.

The Commission would like to invite the Survival International to make a presentation at the next meeting based on the recommendation of Commissioner Assafa.

The Commission unanimously voted to move the starting time of the monthly Commission meeting from 4:30 PM to 5:00 PM.

Commissioner Saucedo, Chairperson, also reminded all the Commissioners that they need to arrive on time so the meeting can start right at 4:30 p.m. and she also pointed out that in order for the Commission meeting to proceed, the Commission must meet the quorum (8 members).

The Commission approved to hold the Commission next meeting in Mission District area.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:45 p.m.
