Minutes of June 1, 2000

The Immigrant Rights Commission (IRC) meeting was held on Thursday, June 1, 2000 in the Hearing Room 416 at 5:00 p.m. in the City Hall.

Members Present

Samuel Assefa, Renee Saucedo, Penelope Chronis, Renato Ecarma, Isabel Huie, Dale Jimenez, Marie Lorraine Mallare, Thou Ny and Richard Ow.

   

Members Absent

Anita Friedman, Phillip Nguyen, Natividad Ramirez, Martin Schenker, Lee Sprague, Nam Thai.

   

Others Present

Dang Pham, Executive Director of the IRC

Minutes

The minutes of the May 4, 2000 meeting was adopted by the Commission.

   

Presentation:

A number of Filipino parents continued to raise the issues related to the Filipino Education Center (FEC) in San Francisco Unified School District.

 

The Filipino parents want to see that their children deserve a strong and seamless bilingual education from kindergarten to high school. The Filipino Education Center received the seal of excellence award this school year from the California Association for Bilingual education (CABE). FEC enhances the social and effective development of the Filipino students through the educational programs.

   
 

Ms. Margaret Leung and five immigrant students of Newcomer High School shared with the Commission of their concerns regarding the decision of the San Francisco Unified School District to relocate the Newcomer High School from Pacifica to Mission.

   

Other

Commission voted to hold a special meeting on Tuesday, June 6, 2000 in City Hall, Room 416 to consider the resolution to the Board of Education in support of the Filipino Education Center and retain the Newcomer High School at its current location.
