Minutes of September 7, 2000

The Immigrant Rights Commission (IRC) community meeting was held on Thursday, September 7, 2000 at the Chinese Six Companies at 843 Stockton Street, San Francisco, CA 94103, at 5:00 A.M.

Members Present Samuel Assefa, Penelope Chronis, Renato Ecarma, Isabel Huie, Dale Jimenez, Marie Lorraine Mallare, Philip Nguyen, Thou Ny, Richard Ow, and Renee Saucedo.

Members Absent Anita Friedman, Natividad Ramirez, Martin Schenker, Lee Sprague, and Nam Thai.

Others Present Dang Pham, Executive Director of the IRC

        William Chan, Deputy City Attorney

Public Comments: About fifty people attended the community meeting at the Chinese Six Companies in Chinatown. Here is the summary of the important issues raised by different people:

        Ms. Margaret Leung, a teacher at Newcomer High School shared with the Commission of her concerns regarding the pending decision by the San Francisco Board of Education to relocate the Newcomer High School from Pacifica to Mission.

    Rev. Ashirvadam Rayikanti of the African Immigrant & Refugee Resource Center (AIRRC) shared with the Commission the mission and purpose of AIRRC. They also highlighted their concerns and issues relating to the African immigrant community in San Francisco.

    A Chinese woman spoke at the meeting about the important need for the bilingual bicultural staff at the nursing homes.

        Traci Dobronavora of Self-Help for the Elderly in Chinatown urged the Commission to support the Citizenship Education and the Language Access Legislation. She also addressed the housing shortage for the immigrant elderly in San Francisco.

        Teresa Wu, Director of the Chinese Newcomer Services Center in Chinatown shared with the Commission her concern regarding the new voting system in San Francisco, childcare service, language class, etc. She urged the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors to provide the public education of the new voting system and district-wide election to all neighborhoods in the City.

Actions: The Commission passed unanimously to hold the next meeting in City Hall, Room 416 on October 5, 2000 at 5:00 P.M.

Adjournment: The community meeting was adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
