Minutes of Special Meeting on June 6, 2000

The Immigrant Rights Commission (IRC) special meeting was held on Tuesday, June 6, 2000 in the Hearing Room 416 at 2:00 p.m. in the City Hall.

Members Present

Renee Saucedo, Penelope Chronis, Renato Ecarma, Isabel Huie, Dale Jimenez, Marie Lorraine Mallare, Richard Ow and Natividad Ramirez.

   

Members Absent

Samuel Assefa, Anita Friedman, Phillip Nguyen, Thou Ny, Martin Schenker, Lee Sprague, Nam Thai.

   

Others Present

Dang Pham, Executive Director of the IRC

 

William Chan, Deputy City Attorney

 

Dr. Sally Chou, Associate Superintendent for Student Support Services, San Francisco Unified School District

   

Presentation

Dr. Chou, Associate Superintendent for Student Support Services of the San Francisco Unified School District, spoke to the Commission about the district’s commitment to provide the best educational program to all students. She indicated that there are on-going efforts to work with Filipino parents to better address the needs of the Filipino immigrant students. Dr. Chou also provided the Commission with the reason for recommending that the Board of Education move the Newcomer High School to another location. According to Dr. Sally Chou, Newcomer High School students will have better access to academic courses, especially science courses, which are required to graduate from high school.

   

Actions:

The Commission passed unanimously the resolution to voice their support to the Filipino Education Center.

The Commission failed to pass the resolution to ask the San Francisco Unified School District to retain the Newcomer High School at its current location with 7 yes and 1 no.
