IRC Response to Cuevas Family Immigrant Rights case
Resolution strongly urging the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors to ask Senator Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer and Representative Pete Stark to respond immediately to the Cuevas family request for immigration assistance.
WHEREAS, The City and County of San Francisco is a City of Refuge for all immigrants from the world and the San Francisco Bay Area; and
WHEREAS, The City and County of San Francisco, just like many major cities in the United States, is the home and the workplace of both legal and illegal immigrants; and
WHEREAS, according to US Census 2000, the City and County of San Francisco is the home of more than 40,000 immigrants of Filipino descent and the workplace of more than 100,000 immigrants of Filipino descent; and
WHEREAS, according to US Census 2000, the City and County of San Francisco is the home of more than 110,000 immigrants of Asian descent and the workplace of thousands of immigrants of Asian descent; and
WHEREAS, according to US Census 2000, the San Francisco Bay Area is the home and workplace of more than 350,000 immigrants of Filipino descent; and
WHEREAS, the Cuevas family is considered by the Filipino and Asian communities in the City and County of San Francisco as part of their family and community; and
WHEREAS, the Cuevas family is considered by the immigrant communities in the City and County of San Francisco as part of their extended family and community; and
WHEREAS, the Cuevas family members have lived in the United States for 19 years and have been role model citizens in the community; and
WHEREAS, the Cuevas family has made efforts towards legalizing their status for more than 10 years; and
WHEREAS, the Cuevas family application for legal status has gone through the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, but to no avail; and
WHEREAS, the Cuevas children have spent all or most of their lives in the U.S. and are ages 24, 23 and 19 years old, having graduated or presently studying at California State University-Hayward, De Anza College and San Jose State University; and
WHEREAS, the Cuevas family are being asked to ‘voluntary depart the United States before February 17, 2004’ by the US Department of Homeland Security; and
WHEREAS, Senator Dianne Feinstein has previously sponsored legislation that granted permanent residency to a Mexican family who was in similar situation as the Cuevas’; and
WHEREAS, The Immigrant Rights Commission is charged with improving the quality of life of immigrants, legal or illegal, within our community, including the Cuevas family; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Immigrant Rights Commission strongly urges the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors to immediately request Senator Dianne Feinstein and Representative Pete Stark, to secure a voluntary departure deferral from the US Department of Homeland Security for Delfin Cuevas, Angelita Cuevas, Dominique Cuevas, and Donna Cuevas; and, be it
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Immigrant Rights Commission strongly urges the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors to immediately request Senator Dianne Feinstein, to act favorably on legislation legalizing their stay of Delfin Cuevas, Angelita Cuevas, Dominique Cuevas, and Donna Cuevas; as Senator Feinstein has done so in a similar immigration case; involving a family from Mexico; and, be it
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Immigrant Rights Commission strongly urges the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors to immediately request Senator Barbara Boxer to coordinate with Senator Dianne Feinstein on the legislation legalizing the stay of Delfin Cuevas, Angelita Cuevas, Dominique Cuevas, and Donna Cuevas; and, be it
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the Commission shall send a copy of this resolution to Senator Dianne Feinstein, Senator Barbara Boxer, Representative Pete Stark, and US Department of Homeland Security.
