New Battery Program By Darcy Brown/Recycling

Ever wonder what to do with those household batteries? Now there is a way for you to keep those icky items out of our landfill and out of our ground water. Starting in April, a new program will be available at every Walgreens store in the City and County of San Francisco that will collect any household battery and responsibly dispose of them. There are 45 Walgreens in the City so there are no excuses!! All you need to do is take your batteries to any Walgreens and dump them in the battery container, that"s it. I am working on getting some discount coupons from battery manufacturers so look for an announcement sometime soon. Coincidentally, the Commission on the Environment has put together a resolution addressing the problem of batteries in our environment, primarily how we use batteries in City Departments, and changes could go into effect as soon as April. Look for the battery article in the next City Scoop and in the meantime, save up your batteries so that you can drop them off at Walgreens and do your part to save out environment.

Featured through May are two photography exhibitions - Robert Welsh"s images from China and Chinatown, and a group exhibition featuring members of the Bay Area Photo Collective. You may have noticed the Braille signage accompanying Robert Welsh"s show. Beginning this month we are working with the Rose Resnick Lighthouse for the Blind to make four exhibitions a year accessible to the blind and sight impaired. Audio tours and Braille transcripts are available M-F 9-2 at the Goodlett Lobby Information Desk, and large type transcripts will accompany the Braille signage downstairs. Special tours for sight impaired visitors can be arranged in advance by contacting me or by calling 554-6080. Regular docent tours on Mondays also include the art spaces downstairs. FYI, we accept exhibition proposals on an ongoing basis. Guidelines are available from me or by calling the contact number above.
