Sylvia Alvarez-Lynch, SEIU Local 790 presented information on behalf of John Cone and on her own behalf, opposed the contract because it sees only one segment of the community and should have diversity.

Judith Argo, SEIU Local 790 representative who is being laid off spoke against approving the contract.

Jonathan Gomwalk, Interim Executive Director SLUG, SLUG helps clients overcome problems to be employable and spoke in favor of approving the contract.

Harold Watkins, SLUG employee supports the program and hope the Commission will approve the contract.

Lawrence Bell, SLUG participant states the program is helping him to stand up and take responsibility for his actions.

Tom Harrison, Laborers Local 261 urges not to renew contract due to difficult economic times and its impact on permanent City employees.

Maria Victa, Public Utilities Commission expressed her support for laid off worker Judith Argo and feels the contract should not be approved.

Oscar Holland, SLUG employee and PACE graduate spoke in support of the program.

Alda Spraggins, Department of Public Works Environmental Control Officer supports “no contracting out” in view of citywide layoffs.

Michael Garcia, SLUG employee for six months praised SLUG for the positive impact the program has had on him.

 

 

 

Action:

Adopt Human Resources Director’s report, approving the contract for two (2) years in duration (July 1, 2003 through June 30, 2005);.  Notify the offices of the Controller and the Purchaser.  (Vote of 3 to 2; Commissioners Safont and Ng dissent.)
