Fictitious Business Name (FBN) Change/Refiling/Renewal

Please read all these instructions before proceeding with Fictitious Business Name Change(s) / Refiling(s) / Renewals.
NOTE: Your business must first be registered with the Treasurer and Tax Collector and all Tax Account information must match your Fictitious Business Name Registration. If you registered or updated your account within 3 business days of filing a Fictitious Business Name application, you must obtain a Temporary Verification of Registration (TVR) from the Office of the Treasurer and Tax Collector, City Hall Room 140, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Complete the Fictitious Business Name application. The same form is used whether you are refiling a statement or filing for the first time. You may download the application by clicking on the following link: Fictitious Business Name Forms.
Verify that your current Business Registration Certificate is consistent with the information on the fictitious business name statement. If not, go to https://sftreasurer.org/business/licenses-and-permits
If filing in person*, submit the completed Fictitious Business Name (FBN) form. The same fees apply whether it is a "First Filing" or a "Refiling" (fees are indicated at the top left of FBN form). Acceptable forms of payment are cash, preprinted check or money order and debit / credit cards.
*Effective January 1, 2014 (CA Business & Professions Code Sec. 17916), anyone filing a Fictitious Business Name Statement in person must present valid government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's license, State-issued identification card, or passport.
Upon filing, an endorsed copy of the FBN statement (usually yellow-colored) will be provided along with a receipt.
Mail the following:
- Original and signed completed FBN form and a photocopy
- A copy of the current Business Registration Certificate
- Payment: a preprinted check or money order payable to S.F. County Clerk
- A self-addressed stamped envelope to:

An Endorsed Copy of the Fictitious Business Name Statement will be returned to you for your records.
Please Note: Mayor London N. Breed has issued a declaration that defers the due date for Business Registration renewals from May 30, 2020, to March 1, 2021. The County Clerk office will accept Business Registration Certificates that have expired within this timeframe provided that the account remains in good standing in all other ways with the Office of the Treasurer & Tax Collector.
