MINUTES

 

             I.      CALL TO ORDER /ROLL CALL                                                  

   Action: Andrea Shorter called the meeting to order at 5:14pm

 

   Committee Members Present:

   Staff Present:

   Emily Murase, Ph. D., Executive Director, Department on the Status of Women

   Presenters:

   GiRLFeST Hawaii and Bay Area: Kathy Xian, Non-Executive Director of GiRLFeST, Inc. and Maria Blanco, GiRLFeST Bay Area Co-Director and Pilar Marketing

 

          II.      ADOPTION OF AGENDA                                      

   (Commissioner Shorter explained parliamentary procedure for public meeting purposes

   to committee members so in the future when committee are chairing meeting they will

   consistently request for motion, second, discussion and public comment when

   appropriate).                

A.                 The agenda was approved for the February 5, 2006 Girls’ Committee

            Meeting (as amended).  Action: D. Liu, moved; M. Ing, seconded, ayes

            approved.


 

 

       III.      ADOPTION OF MEETING MINUTES

A.                 The meeting minutes were approved for the December 7, 2006 Girls’ Committee

      Meeting.  Action: T. Anderson, moved; D. Liu, seconded, ayes approved.

 

        IV.      INTRODUCTIONS & GIRLS COMMITTEE BUSINESS                     

 

A.                 Informal committee members’ introductions including COSW

            Commissioner and DOSW Staff.  

 

Andrea Shorter, Member, Commissioner on the Status of Women.

 

Passionae Anderson (15), Member-elect, attends Civic Center Secondary High School at John Swett Campus and wants to the young women and girls in the underground community discussion to the Girls Committee.

 

Dawn Liu (17), Member, attends School of the Arts High School.

 

Dr. Emily Murase, Executive Director of the Department on the Status of Women.

 

Talia Anderson (17), Member, attends Civic Center Secondary High School at John Swett Campus.

 

Madeline Ing (14), Member, attends George Washington High School.

 

Kim-Shree Maufas, Girls Committee Staffer, Department on the Status of Women.

 

Melissa Padilla (13), Member-elect, attends James Lick Middle School and wants to bring sports discussion to Girls Committee.

 

B.     CEDAW 101: Commissioner Shorter requested that all committee members study their CEDAW introductory information as enclosed.  E. Murase explained about City and County of San Francisco ’s CEDAW Task Force and a gender analysis as illustrated in CEDAW 101 document. Committee members likened CEDAW Treaty to a Women’s Constitution or Bills of Rights.

 

C.     Girls Committee 2007 Meeting Dates: changes made to the following:

      from April 2, 2007 to April 16, 2007 – room changed from 421 to 034

      from September 3, 2007 to September 10, 2007 – same room, 034

      from December 3, 2007 to December 10, 2007– room changed from 421

      to 034


 

 

           V.      OLD BUSINESS

 

A.     Graduate Intern Update: K-S. Maufas inform committee members that the

      Department continues to look for intern to assist in staffing the committee.

        VI.      NEW BUSINESS

 

A.     2007 Girls Committee Projects                                            

1.      Young Women’s Health Conference ‘07 and Young Women’s Conference ’07: K-S. Maufas informed committee members of ongoing discussions to begin a collaboration with UCSF and Assemblyman Leno’s office to institutionalize these events with the Department on the Status of Women and the Commission on the Status of Women’s Girls Committee.  As well and partnering with the GiRLFeST Bay Area event.

 

Commissioner Shorter inquired with committee members if they had heard of Young Women’s Health Conference, and although no committee members had attended, several had heard positive feedback from peers (via Wellness Centers at schools and Peer Resources).  Discussion amongst committee members to keep conference innovative and so that participants return.  General consensus around bringing conference into city partnership to institutionalize so that girls will continue to have opportunities to participate.

 

2.      Girl Fest – 2007 (July 19th – 22nd) Presentation: Kathryn Xian and Maria Blanco present to committee members the history and growth of GiRLFeST over its short lifespan.  GiRLFeST Bay Area reported estimated costs of 4-day Bay Area event would be approximately $50,000 and requested the support/sponsorship from committee along with a request for the committee to be the event’s Youth Steering Committee.  Committee members inquired GiRLFeST Executives to explain what sponsorship assistance actually meant.  Presenters indicated that their needs are city and location permits, discussions with Department/Commission’s partner agencies, and assistance with other San Francisco Youth-led Organizations.  Further discussion about finding out what girls want from event and how do committee members find out that information.  Commissioner Shorter requested that action item for committee members to approve support of GiRLFeST Bay Area. 

 

3.      Girls Services Directory: committee members asked to mark up table of contents from DOSW’s Women’s Services Directory with their ideas for the Girls Services Directory, which will be released in conjunction with the GiRLFeST Bay Area event.  Asked to bring it to the March 2007 meeting.

 

4.      Committee brainstorming (lists distributed): reminding committee members to add ideas to list in upcoming months.
