             I.      CALL TO ORDER /ROLL CALL                                                   ACTION         

Chair Ing called the meeting to order at 5:15pm                                                                                                                        

          II.      ADOPTION OF AGENDA                                                               ACTION       

A.     Action: To approve the agenda for the June 4th, 2007 Girls Committee Meeting.

Quorum was not present so action could not be taken.

 

       III.      ADOPTION OF MINUTES                                                             ACTION        

A.     Action: To approve the minutes from the May 16, 2007 Girls Committee Meeting.

 Quorum was not present so action could not be taken.

 

        IV.      INTRODUCTIONS & GIRL COMMITTEE BUSINESS DISCUSSION

A.     Introductions & Committee Paperwork                                                  

Discussion of attendance of group. Chair Ing asked how present members how they felt about other members not attending meetings regularly and how it affects the group. Feel like they don’t care or that it’s a waste of their time and why am I here if we can’t even adopt the minutes from the previous minutes because we don’t have a quorum.  Committee Members reviewed the Commission on the Status of Women’s attendance requirements, adopted by the Commission in September of 2006.  Committee Members agreed to follow this policy for their committee meetings (copy attached to 6-4-07 draft  minutes).

 

B.     Commission and Department on the Status of Women’s Report on Girls: Benchmarks for the Future

      1. Selection of next topic for discussion                                                            

Chair Ing inquired with the Committee Members about their neighborhoods and whether they liked the area. Committee Members commented on their neighborhoods.  E. Li inquired about sex education and whether Committee Members had classes that dealt with that. M. Padilla indicated that boys laughed in class and made it difficult for girls.  E. Li said that in her class was separated by gender when watching a child birth film, which she thought was a more powerful experience for the girls.  She hoped that the classes could be separated by gender when viewing sex education films.  M. Padilla wanted to advocate for girls playing non-traditional sports, i.e. football, and wanted more sports programs in recreation center. Chair Ing cited an example in her yearbook had a boy’s sports club with only 4 members.  E. Li said that she wanted to know more about the health component of GiRLFeST and that she wanted to be that contact person.  Committee Members reviewed the follow-up health topics: Gender separation in some education, greenhouse effects, GiRLFeST Health Summit, sports, eating right using the Food Pyramid  (www.mypyramid.org), drugs usage and the prevention/anti-drug movement (e.g. why it is cool, peer pressure to use drugs).

 

           V.      OLD BUSINESS                                                                               DISCUSSION

A.                 Intern Update

Committee Members discussed the Enterprise and YouthWorks interns assigned to the Department on the Status of Women.  Policy Analyst Maufas noted that jobs (or paid internships) are available for youth all over the city.

 

B.                 Girl Fest Update – 2007 (July 19th – 22nd)                   

Details for the event are available at www.girlfestbayarea.org.  E. Li requested a one-pager about GiRLFeST and volunteer information.  Everyone needs contact information sent again in e-mail (M. Padilla stated that she preferred to receive information by telephone rather than by e-mail).

 

C. Girl’s Services Directory

Committee Members discussed Assemblywoman Fiona Ma’s participation.

 

D.        2007 Girls Committee Projects                                                            

1.  UCSF’s Center for Excellence (COE) “Young Women’s Health Program”

Committee Members discussed the final planning meeting if the 2007 GiRLFeST Bay Area held in April and identified the related upcoming tasks.

 

2. GiRLFeST Marketing/Outreach Report ( San Francisco Unified School District & Private Summer Schools).

No report.       

           

        VI.      NEW BUSINESS                                                                               DISCUSSION/ACTION

A.        CONSENT AGENDA.                                                                             

 All matters listed hereunder constitute a Consent Agenda and are considered to be routine by the Commission on the Status of Women Girls Committee.  They will be acted upon by a single roll call vote of the Commission.  There will be no separate discussion of these items unless a member of the Commission so requests, in which event the matter shall be removed from the Consent Agenda and considered as a separate item.  Members of the public may speak on each item listed on the Consent Agenda.”

Action:  To approve the Consent Agenda.

1.                  Letter to U.S. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi from Girls Committee supporting GiRLFeST Bay Area.

Girls Committee Members reviewed a draft letter to Speaker Pelosi, and asked that a copy of final letter to be sent to Mayor Newsom’s office.

2.                  Resolution Recognizing LYRIC’s 3rd Annual “Unchained” Queer Youth Conference and Young Women’s Health Fair.

Committee Members read background documents and commented on LYRIC’s health efforts.  M. Padilla inquired about the “LGBTQQ” acronym, which was explained by Policy Analyst Maufas as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and/or Questioning.  The queer and questioning categories were discussed by Committee Members.

 

     VII.      PUBLIC COMMENT                                                                                   DISCUSSION
This item is to allow members of the public to comment generally on matters that will fall within the Girls Committee’s purview as well as to suggest new agenda items for the Committee’s future consideration.

A.     Upcoming “Girl-Focused” Events

1.      LYRIC’s Unchained” Queer Youth Conference and Young Women’s Health Fair

      adventures, childcare, community, education, health, out of school time,

      parent resources, and special needs.

E. Li reported that she has applied for an internship at an environmental research agency (waiting for reply); M. Padilla will be volunteering at the San Francisco Zoo; Chair Ing will be working with the Leadership Institute through Oasis for Girls. And during free time, Committee Members have volunteered to work on 2007 GiRLFeST Bay Area.
