II. DISCUSSION/ POSSIBLE ACTION

  • Meeting with Editorial Board of the SF Chronicle.

Commissioner Keehn reported that she called Parker Blackman, of Fenton Communications, to see if he could provide assistance with contacting the SF Chronicle’s editorial board.  Jill reported that Dr. Murase had repeatedly attempted to contact John Diaz, by phone and email, with no success.

The committee agreed to stop pursuing this meeting, and to instead work to arrange a meeting with the City Editor, who is thought to be more likely to see us.  Jill will write to the City Editor requesting a meeting.

  • Article for Ethnic Media

The committee discussed whether to write a “generic” article that could be tailored to specific ethnic groups.  The group agreed that one possible topic was about the need to adapt domestic violence services to address the needs of immigrant women.  Allyson volunteered to write a first draft and get a concept on paper, and other members of the committee will work on it once Jill circulates the draft.  Ken believes he could get an article published in El Tecalote, and Marily was confident she could get an article published in the Filipino press.  Ken reported that Rodel Rodis, who has a regular column in one of the Filipino papers, has offered to have one of his columns be on the topic of domestic violence.  Once there is a draft of the article, this could be given to Rodel.

  • Press Conference at end of Ramirez Trial

The Ramirez trial will not begin until the fall, so no specific plans need to take place at this time.  The group discussed various media lists that could be utilized.  Bay Area Legal Aid has one that has been updated more recently than DOSW’s.  Dorka will request a copy of EMERGE’s media list, as they keep theirs up-to-date.  Marily has several media lists, which include both Filipino and so-called “mainstream” press.

  • Next Meeting

The group agreed that there was no need to hold the next meeting in person.  The group tentatively agreed to hold a conference call on July 2, 2008 at 2:30pm.  Several people in the group have conference call capacity, so Jill will make arrangements and let everyone know how to join the call.

III. PUBLIC COMMENT

There was no public comment.
