Minutes from Labor Committee Meeting 2-10-17 @ 2:30 pm

  •  Stanford Online HT Training
    • MK: Launched 1/20/17
      • Self-paced training; any amount of time; completely free; need internet access;
        • 3 modules – general public, hospitality industry, restaurant industry
      • Lagunita.stanford.edu/courses
      • Whole thing is less than an hour; even available on cell phone
      • Stanford included a pre-survey (voluntary) that asks industry types/background to gather data on who is watching it;
      • Quizzes – to get certificate, must pass quizzes
      • First training that Stanford has done for the lay audience; so they had to create a new category; “Humanities/Sciences – HumTrfkgAwrns”
      • NoTrafickAhead – creating a map for businesses that have completed the online training
      • In English now, working on translating it into Spanish, Cantonese, and Tagalog (over the next couple of months)
      • Follow up:
        • Who is interested in doing outreach to the industries that would benefit from the trainings?
          • Sign up for working group, if interested
            • Ie. Dept of Commerce
          • Can this be done concurrently with SB1193?
            • 1193 subset is specific, and does not apply to hospitality and a wider network of restaurants
          • (BM) Two bills have been introduced to include hotels and motels  - will send to MK more info
            • AB260 – Santiago is the author – requires postings to hotels and motels
            • SB225 -???
        • AT – potential to be used for foreigners visiting the us, used in consulates for those coming on h2a/h2b or diplomatic visas via consular processing; maybe reaching out to dept of state
          • LATINAN – has contacts with Mexican Consulate
          • Outreach being done at Mexican Consulate; maybe including other consulates for the monthly presentations?
    • Healthy Nail Salon Update
      • VC @ALC: voluntary program on safe practices and environmental practices and can get a “sticker” at the completion of ‘training’
        • Includes info on labor rights and ht violations
        • Reviewing Chinese translation of ppt; Vietnamese ppt should be done in the next week and alc will review it;
        • DEH will work with ALC to practice the ppt; and make sure that labor rights portions are communicated effectively
        • 95% of nail technicians speak Vietnamese
        • the trainer is also a nail technician
      • Follow up
        • Pushing the word out to consumers: SIGN UP if interested in expanding the healthy nail salon program to include info on labor rights
          • Only 30 out of the 200+ that are participating

    • Mayors TF – one of the goals are to distribute the work among the CBOs and community, and not falling so heavily on the govt employees working on the TF

        • So much focus on shelters for sex trafficking only, to bring into the convo labor victims

        • Involving them and doing outreach to identify signs because they are being adversely affected (individual businesses or groups; unions; etc) or otherwise
      • Expand employment/vocational services for survivors
        • Employment readiness training and workplaces that could be sensitive to their history so they are not re-exploited/re-traumatized
        • LATINAN: has a trainer that works with groups in Alameda County –
      • Regional efforts with other TFs
        • Cross communication across the various county/state players
        • Bay area talking about problems as one front, being a liaison at other TFs
          • Reporting back to sf labor committee mtg; what is being done, and what is being addressed or needing to be addressed

      • Create a Resource List and ensure survivor’s connection to services and support
        • Mayors tf has one from 2 years ago, could use revamping
      • Record expungements for persons trafficked, and to be documented in the annual report, and work collaboratively to get more expungements
        • Include someone from Clean Slate program at Public Defender’s office?
        • CA legal language that says that if they did not know about their immig consequences,they can go back and try to get immigrants’ records expunged

      • Leverage city purchasing to priority trafficking supply chains
        • City agencies and govt for sweat free and food-wise purchasing
          • Ie. Dph , sheriff’s dept; mayb including the actual purchaser for the City
