San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women

Resolution Recognizing Dr. Alicia Boccellari

on the Occasion of the 2019 Mental Health Awareness Month

BE IT KNOWN That the Commission on the Status of Women of the City and County of San Francisco hereby issues and authorizes the execution of the following commendation:

WHEREAS, In 1949, the National Association for Mental Health designated May as Mental Health Awareness Month in order to better educate the American people about the importance of mental health; and, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office on Women’s Health, over 1 in 5 women in the United States experience depression, anxiety, and/or other mental health condition, much of which are related to trauma, violence, and/or loss; and,

WHEREAS, When Dr. Alicia Boccellari developed the UCSF Trauma Recovery Center in 2001 as a pilot program funded by a small grant from the state and served as its first director, she could not have anticipated that the innovative model of trauma-focused services for comprehensive mental health, case management, and psychosocial services to survivors of violent crime, particularly those from underserved communities, would become a model for 24 additional centers throughout the country, including 14 in California such as Long Beach and Stockton, and inspire programs in Ohio and Illinois with plans for centers in New York, New Jersey, Georgia, and Florida; and that she would literally write the manual for transforming services for survivors of violent crime; and,

WHEREAS, The Trauma Recovery Center’s Rape Treatment Center, working together with the San Francisco General Hospital Emergency Department, provides a nurse practitioner or physician assistant forensic specialist to provide trauma-informed medical care and mental health support for victim/survivors of sexual assault; and, Dr. Boccellari has been a tireless champion in the fight to end drug-facilitated rape, campus sexual assault, and other forms of violence against women;

NOW THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED That the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women honors Dr. Alicia Boccellari, UCSF Professor Emeritus of Clinical Psychiatry, on the occasion of the 2019 Mental Health Awareness Month and expresses deepest appreciation for her leadership in supporting trauma-impacted women and girls of San Francisco.
