Resolution Recognizing Rosie Rios

 

BE IT KNOWN That the Commission on the Status of Women of the City & County of San Francisco hereby authorizes the execution, by the subscribing Commissioners, of the following commendation:

 

WHEREAS, A native of Hayward, California, Rosie Rios was raised together with 8 siblings by a single mother who emphasized the importance of work and education; and, as the 43rd Treasurer of the United States, Ms. Rios had an extraordinary tenure overseeing a 4,000-person $5 billion agency, serving as Senior Advisor to the Treasury Secretary for community development and public engagement, and was recognized with the Hamilton Award, the highest honor in the U.S. Department of the Treasury; and,

 

WHEREAS, As Treasurer, Ms. Rios initiated a nationwide public engagement campaign to include images of women leaders in U.S. currency that led to the announcement that, on the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote in 2020, former slave turned legendary abolitionist Harriet Tubman will appear on the $10 bill; and, to mark the 2016 Women’s Equality Day, Ms. Rios launched a new initiative “Teachers Righting History” to promote the stories of historic American women in classrooms, in public statues, Congressional Gold Medals, and a women’s history museum in Washington, DC.; and,

 

WHEREAS, The “Empowerment 2020 San Francisco Count Up Conference,” organized by Ms. Rios in partnership with the City & County of San Francisco to mark the 2017 Women’s Equality Day, will celebrate historic and current figures focused on the economic and political empowerment of women and girls by featuring local, regional and state stakeholders in decision-making capacities with a shared interest in the advancement of women, inspiring the next generation of leadership.

 

NOW THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED That the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women, on the occasion of the 2017 Women’s Equality Day, expresses its deepest appreciation to Rosie Rios for her extraordinary work advancing the stories of leading women who might otherwise be forgotten and wishes her every success in fulfilling her vision of Empowerment 2020.
