Urging USD to provide bilingual programs to the Filipino Students


WHEREAS, the Filipino students deserve strong Immersion and bilingual education programs; and,

WHEREAS, the Filipino Education Center (FEC) is highly recognized and commended for their success in educating the Filipino students; and,

WHEREAS, the San Francisco Unified School District should maximize their public outreach effort in order to recruit more incoming Filipino students and their families for the bilingual and immersion education programs at Filipino Education Center; and,

WHEREAS, the Immigrant Rights Commission support the original decision of the Board of Education to integrate the schools in the South of Market, particularly Bessie Carmichael Elementary School and the Filipino Education Center, for programmatic and academic reasons; and,

WHEREAS, the Immigrant Rights Commission recognize the urgency of the building of a new school at Bessie Carmichael Elementary School and the realignment of school sites and resources in the South of Market area; and,

WHEREAS, the immigrant families, particularly the Filipinos, who do not have any other school in the district with the Filipino

Bilingual and Immersion programs to send their children to; now, therefore

We resolved, that the San Francisco Immigrant Rights Commission does hereby strongly encourage the San Francisco Unified School District to continue in the effort to work closely with Filipino parents, community members, and service providers for solution of the issues and concerns mentioned above.

We resolved that San Francisco Unified School District funded an adequate bilingual and immersion education programs for the Filipino community from K-12.

We resolved that San Francisco Unified School District to make all efforts to build a replacement building for the exist Bessie Carmichael Elementary School.

I hereby certify that the foregoing resolution was adopted by the San Francisco Immigrant Rights Commission at its special meeting of June 6, 2000.
