Library circulation represents the number of physical and electronic library materials used by the public each month. This includes:

  • San Francisco's Main Library
  • Branch libraries
  • Bookmobiles
  • Jail and reentry services
  • The Juvenile Justice Center
  • Interlibrary loan
  • Electronic print, audio and visual materials downloaded or streamed through the library’s website

How Performance is Measured

Circulation statistics are generated from the Library’s automated circulation system. Reports are generated on a monthly basis.

SF Public Library projects monthly target ranges using pre-COVID historical data to account for seasonality and predictable rates of change in service provision. The number displayed on the scorecard page is the number of materials circulated in the latest month for which data are available.
