Approval of final Asthma Task Force Policy on Grant Application Coordination

·        Support for BAEHC Air Pollution Reduction Protocol and Public Participation Protocol to be submitted to the BAAQMD (5 minutes)

 Begin ATFSustainability and Fundraising discussion

·        Margi and Anjali will be spearheading plans and discussions around this topic.  The SFATF will lose CAFA funding in Feb 2010 but will remain a legislated task force until the sunset date of Jun 2011.  Discussion followed about staffing, structure and function of SFATF.

·        Karen felt that the effort it takes to sustain a coalition can be unmanageable.  There is a lot of process versus work, especially as a legislated task force.

·        Anjali clarified that without dedicated funding for Breathe California to provide staffing they will simply continue to participate as everyone else does and share the responsibilities.

·        Karen pointed out that Breathe could easily continue to play a convener and facilitator role in the community to coordinate ATF even as a community coalition.

·        All agreed that easiest funding is for projects and all have projects that they are invested in seeing succeed.  Participation may become more focused around projects which can be housed in the most logical places (i.e. DPH-Healthy Housing/consumer products; ARC, Inc.- Clinical initiatives like SF Asthma Network; Breathe California-oversight, outreach, and partnering with the community; etc.)

·        SFATF is beginning the process of grassroots community work after many years of policy and systemic initiatives.

·        Margi asked about occupational health as a topic

·        Karen suggested we look at our workplan and policy objectives and develop concrete steps to move them forward.

ATF Budget and add-back request; Volunteers to attend BOShearing  (10 minutes)

·         Reviewed draft letter to Board of Supervisors to make ATF addback request.  Karen will submit on behalf of ATF.

·        Anjali will contact Supervisor Avalos’ office to get date of addback hearing

·

Updates:

Schools--SFUSD Meetings

·        District Asthma Team report to the Board of Education will occur on August 11th and ATF will likely be able to speak as well.

·        Would be wonderful if Nan could testify that day and to be on a video giving a message to parents about diagnosis, medications, permission, forms, etc.

·        A long discussion followed about the effectiveness of Asthma Emergency Care Plan process. Peg feels strongly that the form needs to be simplified and consolidated into one page to encourage clinicians to fill it out.  She also suggested having these forms signed by the DPH Director as a standing order and having medications (Albuterol) for PE and after school on hand.  This may be a state issue.

·        Margi offered to draft a letter to legal depts. to see if this could be supported.

·        Discussed inviting Sabrina from Legal Aid to next meeting to get legal perspective on this issue.

Childcare--Disinfection Pilot Project

·        Karen provided an update. This project is very successful so far and the project coordinators are doing a tremendous job.  They have observed cleaning practices of 7 child care sites, including one SFUSD Child Development Center, and will be doing trainings and pilot testing of the products that have been researched to help reduce the use of bleach.

Clinical

·        Next SF Asthma Network Meeting is in October

·        HERCresearch project (5 minutes) - Tabled

World Asthma Date event report (5 minutes)

·        Partners recognized are engaged in SFATF projects and discussions.  Was very worthwhile.

CaliforniaBreathing Housing Forum report (5 minutes)

·        Karen, Gloria and Anjali attended this forum which brought together stakeholders from the health and housing realms.  Some good momentum and discussion about possible local, state, and national efforts to support healthy housing.  Interested to see what follows.

·        Karen provided an update on 2 BAEHC protocols proposed to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District
