ASTHMA TASK FORCE MONTHLY MEETING

Minutes

Monday, April 28, 2008

Members Present: Anjali Nath, Gloria Thornton, Mary Higgins, Nadia Thind, Karen Cohn, Neil Gendel, Denys Cruz, Nan Madden, Rose Toney, Peg Strub, Marie Hoemke

 

Guests and Staff: Stephanie Manfre , Raymond Manion, Gail Herrick, Vince Fabris, Sue Watson

 

1)      Approval of April minutes Quorum met- Minutes approved.  May meeting rescheduled for June 9, 2008

 

2)      Approval of Amended Bylaws

a)      Discussion- monthly meetings go to quarterly, steering committee TBD, committees monthly. Discussion held about why meetings will be quarterly.  Stephanie and Anjali clarified that committees will be monthly, that discussion was held at past (Fall) ATF meetings.  Some worry that momentum will be lost if quarterly meetings are held.  Karen reiterated that committees will meet monthly, work will continue as committees will continue to meet.

b)      Karen moved to accept bylaws, Rose 2nd.  Motion approved.

 

3)      Announcements

a)      ATF extension passed through June 2011.

b)      Mary Higgins back at HERC- Susan G. Koman breast cancer project Coordinator

c)      Karen would like ATF to endorse state bill AB 2808.  Neil explained to group that the bill was weak, watered down, does not have enough regulation. Can be used with preemption, state could prevent local legislation, thus tying our hands at the local level.  ATF will not endorse.

d)      Karen announced that child care IAQ posters are ready and will be distributed throughout child care community

e)      Article about SFUSD/BOE hearing in Today’s Examiner, ATF ads also running in Examiner about safe cleaning practices

f)       Karen announced that the ATF will be applying to CPMC for Green Cleaning/SFUSD project for $50,000.

g)      Gloria announced that ATF will by applying to Kaiser for $25,000 for extension of clinical committee project.

h)      Nan’s SFGH pediatric asthma clinic filming orientation video- will be available in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, and Vietnamese

i)        Karen’s staff helping to recreate Kaiser/Natasha PSA in Spanish and Cantonese.

 

 

4)      ATF Fiscal Matters

a)      CPMC grant- 4 mailings complete, 3 of 4 focus groups.  Will write final report for CPMC.  Gloria looking for additional funding to hire an epidemiologist for report.  ATF will be presented with CPMC final report.

 

b)      AFT General Fund spending- money transferred to SFUSD for custodial products.  2 spirometers purchased for clinics, most of spending for 2007-2008 finished.  June meeting we will need to work on add-back requests for specific projects.

 

5)      CAFA Report Card

a)      Karen passed on CAFA report card.  Has clinical addendum. Zip code data ATF was given from State was wrong for 2001-2002, 2005-2006.  Data inverted when given out.  Disparity data in report card will be slightly inaccurate, though disparities still exist.  8 zipcodes have disparities.

 

6)      World Asthma Day- May 6, 2008

Event to be held from 10-12 at Pier One.  10:30-11, press conference; 11-11:30- present honorees.  Rose will co-present awards with Barbara Spark of the US EPA.

 

a)      Marie, Peg, Mary, Gloria, Karen, Nan, Ray, Nadia, Denys, Stephanie Williams, Silvia Raymundo all attending.  David Lo and Harriet will be available to speak with Chinese press. Silvia can help with Spanish press.

 

b)      Sophie Maxwell will speak at press conference. Gloria will do introduction

 

c)      Press packets to include: press release, report card, vignettes, handouts (ATF fliers and materials)

 

d)      Will include ATF posters, etc. at an information table. 

 

e)      Anjali will send flow, agenda, etc. to ATF by end of week.

 

7)      Public Comment

a)      Marie announced that Karen’s Dept will be honored on May 10th at Chrissy Field Center.

b)      Bayview Shuttle will start in May, low emissions vehicle will be used.
