 Meeting Minutes

 

I.                    Welcome

In attendance:  Gloria Thornton, Sabrina Adler, Krista Ward, Nan Madden, Amy Dietz, Ashley Mevi, Peg Strub, Louanne Lee (via phone), Marie Hoemke (attempted to call in, technical difficulties)

 

II.          Amend/Confirm Agenda (2 mins) Agenda reviewed and confirmed.

 

III.             KPOO Radio Series (15 mins)

·        Louanne Lee from SFUSD Student Support Services was commended for a tremendous interview given on KPOO talking about SFUSD’s asthma initiatives! 

o       Importance of emergency care plans for all children with asthma, allergies, diabetes, seizures

o       Key points: Talk to your provider about setting up an asthma I) Asthma Emergency Care  plan; everyone who cares for a child needs to know about the child’s asthma and knows about and has access to their medications (teacher, afterschool, child care, etc.)

o       Need a separate medication form for each medication

o       Importance of having current medication at school that is not expired

·        Discussed future points to make:

o       Need to bring forms to doctor’s appointment to fill out on a regular basis – every year or whenever there are any changes in management.

·        Gloria suggested we look into Costco 400 generic prescription medications available for $4.

·        SFUSD School Health/Student Support Services website is www.healthiersf.org 

·        Future speakers:

o       Andi Marmor, MD, SFGH Pediatric Asthma Clinic – Asthma 101

o       Barbara Spark, US EPA Region 9 – Mold

o       Sabrina Adler, Bay Area Legal Aid

o       Sara Shortt, Housing Rights Committee

 

IV.              Fund Raising Planning

·        Anjali announced that if the group wants to try to do a fundraising event she will spearhead that.

·        Will continue discussion in between meetings 

 

V.                 Committee Issues/Crucial Updates

·        Clinical Committee

o       Autumn Asthma Updates will be held on Friday October 2, 2009. George Su MD will speak on differentiating Asthma from COPD. Carla Callao, MD will talk about working with Latino Families, Laura Brainin-Rodriguez, MS, MPH, RD will speak on Asthma and Nutrition, and Peg Strub, MD will pull everything together with adult and child case studies.

   

o       Pediatric Asthma  Hospitalization Study part 2 at SFGH  has  received final IRB approval and the surveys are being sent out  Still waiting for full report on focus groups from  Part I of the study at CPMC from researcher Vickie Krenz at California State University, Fresno.

 

o       Kaiser Permanente Comminity Benefits grant Your Clinic an Agent of Change continues with a focus on pairing clinical education with systemic quality improvement. ;  One project involves working to educate staff about  smoking cessation using motivational interviewing at Native American Health Center and St. Anthony’s Free medical Clinic

;

o       Kaiser Permanente Community Benefits grant Making the Patient a Part of the Team is beginning with a focus on culturally sensitive communications

 

o       David Lo is helping at Silver Avenue Family Health Cenyer .providing education on environmental issues;

o       Held first call to follow-up on phase one Pediatric Asthma Hospitalization Study intervention for community providers. Considering training Americorp volunteers. Anjali will gather additional information on Americorp.

 

 

·        Environmental Committee

o       Working on policy promotion at dollar stores

o       Working with SF Housing Authority

§         Sent out a large document; getting $5k of donated time to do IPM training; getting hard copy to SFHA

§         Got RAMP Legacy grant to establish a resource for the community and get training for Housing Rights Committee staff on asthma.

o       Discussed following up with SFHA on camera use and effectiveness (Anjali)

o       Anjali will pass information on allergenic plants from Krista to Nik K. at SFUSD

·        Schools/Child Care committee

o       Working on SFUSD transition to green custodial cleaning products

o       Utilizing SF Foundation-funded project on reducing the overuse of bleach to support full transition to all schools and child care in SFUSD

 

     

VI.              Set October Quarterly Meeting Agenda (10 mins)

·        Updates, brainstorm about other topics

·        Podcasts

·        Potential Speakers:  Dr. Washington Burns (BreathMobile); Vincent Webster (Shuttle); Health First at St. Luke’s

·        Anjali, Gloria and Karen will discuss membership issues

 

VII.           Breath of Life Walk – participation opportunities

·       Ashley Mevi from Breathe California is spearheading the Asthma in Action Team and has invited all to participate as team members or as volunteers. 

 

VIII.        Announcements

·       Sue (RAMP) – Save the Date for Oct 27th, 9-2pm in Sacramento for the School Environmental Health Asthma Collaborative meeting

o      Anjali will inform others

·       Karen is going to pay for SFGH staff to participate in online training to promote office spirometry

o      Anjali will ask Karen if there is room for additional attendees

·       Ashley gave an update on the webinars Breathe California has been hosting

·       Amy announced the Childhood Obesity 2010 conference: The Next Generation of Prevention and Management.  www.breastfeeding.org

·       Krista will email Amy to get Save the Date flyers
