Building Capacity of Child Care Providers for Asthma Management

N. Thind spoke with Janie Garcia of SF Head Start

"All About Asthma" training in Spanish is scheduled for Friday, Oct 27th, conducted by Alma Avila (City College) and Leticia Medina (DPH)

There seems to be a need to ensure existing trainings consist of an effective team which includes someone medically trained to present the portion related to medications, RRT, PHN, etc.

Question: Are they being trained to use a nebulizer?

K. Cohn pointed out that there are licensing requirements for Child Care providers with respect to asthma

Suggested A. Nath contact Twyla Brown and Ellen Wolfe from DPH MCH to see if Carol Thrailkill can participate in the workgroup and reinforce the need to create a common set of standards and curriculum. It is time to renew who trainers are, set curriculum and train a cadre of trainers on the curriculum.

People to involve in Childcare workgroup:

Derrick Aioki is coordinator for First 5

City College – Alma Avila, Annie Tse; Early childhood education program

SF State/SF Head Start

Childcare Health Consultants (PHNs at DPH)

Question: Who is paid already to provide training?

N. Thind will invite J. Garcia to participate in SFATF Child Care Workgroup

A. Nath will facilitate Alma Avila getting contact info for DPH Child Care Health Consultants

A. Nath will coordinate next meeting of Child Care Workgroup.
